The audio reels from Liam Sorel were a bombshell, but Julian and Sierra’s camp didn’t slow down. They hit back, hard.

My phone started ringing off the hook the next morning. Not from friends, but from entertainment reporters, their questions laced with insinuation.

“Mrs. Croft,” one journalist began, “we’re getting reports that you mismanaged Croft Media’s funds, even neglected Julian’s mother during his absence. Any comment?”

Then the articles started appearing online. *Hollywood Reporter*, *Variety*, even a few gossip blogs picked it up. “Croft Media CEO Accused of Financial Elder Abuse,” one headline screamed. Another, “Was Julian Croft’s Absence a Convenient Cover for Wife’s Embezzlement?”

The pieces, clearly coordinated, painted me as a manipulative, greedy woman who took advantage of her husband’s “disappearance” to seize control and bleed the studio dry. They alleged I had neglected Evelyn’s care, squandered studio profits, and was now trying to cling to power.

The phone rang again. It was Evelyn’s care facility, a panicked nurse on the other end.

“Mrs. Croft, you need to come down here. Immediately.”

I drove there in a haze of anger and disbelief. When I arrived, the lobby was buzzing with activity. Two imposing men in dark suits, flanked by a stern-looking woman, were speaking with the facility director. Process servers.

“Mrs. Croft,” the director said, her face pale. “They’re here on behalf of Mr. Julian Croft. They’re attempting to revoke your healthcare proxy for Evelyn.”

One of the men stepped forward, a thick stack of papers in his hand. “Clara Croft? You are hereby served with an emergency order to show cause, seeking to transfer medical power of attorney for Evelyn Croft to Julian Croft, based on allegations of gross negligence and financial impropriety in her care.”

My hands trembled as I took the documents. The allegations were sickening: that I had withheld necessary treatments, delayed critical appointments, and failed to provide a safe living environment. It was all a lie, a cruel inversion of the truth. I had poured my heart and every available resource into Evelyn’s well-being.

“This is outrageous,” I said, my voice shaking with fury. “I’ve paid $14,000 a month for five years for Evelyn’s care. Julian hasn’t sent a dime.”

The woman with the process servers, Julian’s new lawyer, merely gave me a cold, professional stare. “Mr. Croft asserts that he was unaware of the extent of his mother’s care needs and that you exploited his absence to gain control.”

“He was actively developing film scripts in Oregon!” I nearly shouted, the words tumbling out. “He wasn’t missing, he was planning his comeback with Sierra’s family!”

The lawyer simply raised an eyebrow. “Those are unsubstantiated claims, Mrs. Croft. Our concern is Evelyn Croft’s immediate safety and welfare, which, according to our reports, has been jeopardized under your care.”

My gaze drifted past them to a small television mounted on the wall in the waiting area. A local news channel was playing, and an entertainment reporter’s face flashed across the screen.

“…reports of alleged elder abuse and financial mismanagement surrounding the estranged wife of director Julian Croft,” the reporter droned, her voice flat. “Sources close to the Croft family indicate a possible neglect of matriarch Evelyn Croft’s health…”

It was a full-blown smear campaign, targeting my reputation, my character, and now, my ability to care for Evelyn. They weren’t just trying to seize the studio; they were trying to dismantle my life, piece by piece. The understanding settled in: this wasn’t just about money for them; it was about humiliation, about rewriting history to make me the villain.
