Chapter 19: One Year Later

My hand instinctively tightened on the flash drive, the plastic warm against my clammy palm. I pushed the bedroom door open a crack. Brandon stood in the hallway, a furtive, anxious look on his face, holding a small, unmarked envelope. Brenda Gable stood beside him, her expression a predatory smirk.

“Brandon?” I said, my voice barely a whisper.

He spun around, his face paling as he saw me. “Elena! What—”

“You sold me out,” I finished for him, the words tasting like ash. “For fifteen thousand dollars?”

Brenda Gable stepped forward, her arms crossed. “It was a very generous offer, considering your family’s dire financial straits, Ms. Ross. And a guaranteed city job for Brandon. Not to mention your aunt’s medical subsidy will be reinstated.”

Brandon averted his gaze, fiddling with the envelope in his hands. “It’s for Aunt Karen, Elena. And for me. You’re ruining everything! All this over a few lab dogs and old papers? Just give them the letter. Let this go.”

My mind reeled. For years, I had been the invisible pillar, propping up Brandon’s endless job searches, managing Aunt Karen’s complex care, sacrificing my own life for their comfort. And this was my reward. This betrayal.

“A few lab dogs?” I repeated, my voice rising. “Those ‘dogs’ are living beings, Brandon. And those ‘old papers’ prove Hallowell has been poisoning our city’s water for a decade, enriching himself while people get sick!”

“Poisoning?” He scoffed, his face twisting into a sneer. “That’s just paranoia, Elena. You’ve been under too much stress with Aunt Karen. You’re not thinking straight.”

Brenda Gable nodded, a condescending smile playing on her lips. “He’s right, Elena. You’re clearly unwell. Come quietly now, and perhaps we can mitigate the charges.”

The patronizing words, the dismissive attitude towards the truth, the betrayal of my own brother—it all coalesced into a cold, hard resolve. The chains of obligation, the burden of being everyone’s caretaker, snapped.

“You want me to just hand over the evidence of a federal crime because it inconveniences you?” I asked, my voice suddenly steely. “You’re all complicit.”

Brandon lunged for me, a desperate lunge for the flash drive I held. “Just give it to them, Elena! Don’t be selfish!”

I sidestepped him, my adrenaline surging. This was the moment. I knew the apartment layout. I grabbed my laptop bag, securing the flash drives inside.

“You chose your side, Brandon,” I said, my voice devoid of emotion. “Don’t ever call me again.”

I spun on my heel, darting towards the back window of the bedroom. It opened onto a rusty fire escape. As I fumbled with the latch, I heard the distant wail of sirens growing closer. Captain Brody. Brenda Gable had made the call.

The window burst open. I clambered out, just as the sound of splintering wood erupted from the apartment’s front door. Brody’s officers were breaking through. I didn’t look back. I scrambled down the metal rungs, leaving my past, my family, and their betrayals behind in the encroaching siren song.

At 2:14 AM, I was taking out the trash behind the Philadelphia Municipal Annex when I heard a faint whimpering inside a sealed steel dumpster.
