At Our Father's Funeral, My Brother Accused Me of Stealing His Inheritance — But What the Family Safe Revealed Twisted Everything
The skepticism from Liz and Rob, though understandable, only intensified my resolve. I needed the smoking gun, the undeniable proof that would connect Arthur to his crimes and put an end to Daniel’s destructive denials. I returned to my workstation, plunging back into the complex algorithms of the micro-SD card.
Hours later, the phone buzzed. It was Rob. His voice was urgent, devoid of his usual calm composure.
“Evelyn, you need to see this,” he said, his words clipped. “I just received an alert. It’s Daniel.”
My blood ran cold. “What is it?”
“After our meeting, I set up some basic monitoring on Arthur’s legitimate accounts,” Rob explained quickly. “Just to track any unusual activity, given Daniel’s past. I didn’t expect much, but…”
He paused, a heavy sigh on the other end. “He just initiated several large-sum transfers. From a remote island bank, Evelyn. Obscure accounts that were still linked to some of Arthur’s older, less active, but still legitimate holdings. He’s moving millions. It looks like he’s trying to liquidate everything he can get his hands on and… disappear.”
A wave of shock washed over me, immediately followed by a surge of adrenaline. Daniel was attempting to flee. He knew I was getting closer, even if he pretended otherwise. His desperate move was a direct response to my progress, to the perceived threat of full exposure. This was Round 4 of the escalation.
“How much?” I demanded, my voice tight.
“Over two million dollars in various currencies,” Rob replied, his voice strained. “He’s consolidating, then sending it all to a destination that’s… well, it’s a one-way ticket for anyone trying to escape the law.”
The sheer audacity of it, the scale of his desperation, was chilling. He was making a last-ditch effort, not just to steal, but to vanish. The image of him, casually dismissing my hacking skills, now looked like a desperate performance, a delaying tactic while he planned his escape.
“Can you stop him?” I asked, my mind racing.
“Too late for some of it,” Rob admitted. “These are older accounts, and he has signing authority for certain transfers that don’t trigger immediate bank holds. By the time we could get a court order, he’ll be gone, and the money untraceable.”
He was leveraging the loopholes, the less-scrutinized corners of Arthur’s older financial infrastructure. It was another petty cruelty, a deliberate exploitation of systems designed for trust.
“But I was able to flag some of the transfers,” Rob continued, a note of triumph in his voice. “We have a window. If we can get him on something concrete, something undeniable, before he completes the final transfers… we might be able to freeze what’s left. But we need definitive proof, Evelyn. And fast.”
His words echoed Liz’s from earlier: irrefutable proof. Daniel’s imminent flight amplified the urgency. My partial decryption of Arthur’s dark secrets wasn’t enough. We needed the entire truth, laid bare, now.
I looked at the micro-SD card, sitting innocuously on my desk. The final, most heavily encrypted layers still stubbornly resisted my every attempt. Arthur had built this fortress well. He had made it so only someone with my specific skills could even hope to breach it.
But now, that intricate design, that carefully crafted secrecy, was working against us. It was slowing me down, giving Daniel the precious hours he needed to vanish. The irony was bitter. Arthur’s desire for concealment was enabling Daniel’s escape.
I thanked Rob, my mind already formulating a new strategy. Daniel’s move had crystallized everything. This wasn’t just about clearing my name or exposing his greed. This was a race against time. A race to uncover my father’s deepest secrets before my brother disappeared, taking a portion of that tainted legacy with him, and leaving me, and my mother, with only fragments and questions. The fate of the Caldwell family, its reputation, and its future, hung in the balance.
