Chapter 16: On Her Next Birthday

The weight of Arthur’s cryptic journal entries pressed down on me, heavy and suffocating. But first, I had to deal with Daniel. Armed with the irrefutable digital ledgers detailing his $3.2 million fraud, I decided to confront him directly. I wanted to give him a chance to confess, to spare our mother further pain, to perhaps salvage some shred of family dignity.

I found Daniel in the living room, ostensibly comforting Eleanor, who looked frail and tear-stained. He had a solicitous arm around her, whispering reassurances. He looked up when I entered, his eyes narrowing slightly, a flicker of apprehension crossing his face before he recomposed himself into his usual facade of concern.

“Evelyn,” he said, his voice smooth, “what is it? Mother is already distraught.”

Eleanor looked at me with weary eyes, her face swollen from crying. “Please, Evelyn. No more arguments. Not today.”

I ignored them both, walking straight towards Daniel. I held my laptop in one hand, the screen still displaying the meticulous records of his theft.

“I know, Daniel,” I said, my voice low but firm. “I know everything.”

His eyes widened almost imperceptibly. He quickly recovered, managing a scoff. “Know what, Evelyn? That you’re going through Mother’s grief-stricken imagination? Or concocting more absurd theories?”

I set the laptop down on the coffee table, turning it to face him. The glowing screen illuminated his pale face, highlighting the numbers, the dates, the names of the shell companies.

“This,” I stated, pointing to the screen, “is a detailed record of your withdrawals. Over $3.2 million, Daniel. Transferred from multiple accounts over the last six months. Your gambling debts, your offshore payments, your personal shell companies. It’s all here.”

Daniel stared at the screen, his face draining of color. For a moment, he was speechless, caught in the undeniable evidence. I almost hoped, foolishly, that he would break, that the shame would finally force a confession.

But then, the mask snapped back into place. His eyes hardened, a flash of pure malice crossing them. He slammed his hand down on the coffee table, making Eleanor jump.

“This is garbage!” he roared, his voice trembling with manufactured rage. “Fabricated! You’re sick, Evelyn! You’re going through Dad’s private files, playing with your hobby computer skills, and now you’re trying to frame me!”

Eleanor whimpered, pulling away from him. “Daniel, please!”

“Silence, Mother!” he snapped, turning his fury on her for a moment before refocusing on me. “You think you can just make up some fake evidence with your little hacking games? This is illegal, Evelyn! You’re accessing private data, illegally! I’ll report you! I’ll have you thrown in jail for cybercrime!”

The threat was a petty cruelty, weaponizing my hidden skills against me, twisting my pursuit of truth into an act of criminality. He was trying to turn my strength into a weakness, to instill fear.

“These are Arthur’s files, Daniel,” I countered, my voice unwavering despite the tremor in my hands. “He hid them. And he intended for them to be found. The encryption alone proves how desperate he was to protect what’s inside.”

“Protect what?” he sneered, laughing humorlessly. “His precious, naive daughter from the big bad world? No, Evelyn. He was protecting his legacy from *you*. From your overactive imagination, your delusion. You’re unhinged, consumed by grief. You’re hallucinating.”

He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. “You found nothing. This is a figment of your desperate mind. If you show this to anyone, Evelyn, I will make sure your life is ruined. Your reputation, your career… gone. I will tell everyone you’re a deranged hacker fabricating evidence to steal your brother’s inheritance.”

He was not just denying; he was retaliating. He was spinning a counter-narrative, making me the villain, the one consumed by greed and unethical methods. He was using fear and intimidation, trying to make me back down, to question my own sanity.

Eleanor, wide-eyed and terrified, looked between us, utterly lost. She desperately wanted to believe Daniel, to believe in the family unity he so loudly proclaimed. His denial, his outrage, felt more convincing to her than my quiet, factual presentation.

“Daniel, you have proof,” I said, my voice thick with disappointment. “It’s undeniable.”

“There is no proof!” he roared again, standing up and towering over me. “Only your sick fantasy! I will not stand by and let you destroy this family with your lies, Evelyn. I swear it.”

He stalked out of the room, leaving a stunned silence in his wake. Eleanor stared at me, her expression a mixture of confusion and accusation. She didn’t believe me. Not fully. Daniel had succeeded in planting a seed of doubt, making my victory feel not only hollow but actively dangerous. I realized then that Daniel was not just a thief; he was a master manipulator, willing to fight dirty, to destroy everything, including my own standing, to protect his lies. The fight was far from over.
