Chapter 12: Pyrrhic Reality

The endless cycle of motions and counter-motions began immediately. Lawyers called, documents piled up, and every decision I made for Leo was scrutinized. It was a calculated strategy to overwhelm me.

I realized I couldn’t fight a multi-state legal war while simultaneously navigating the administrative red tape of Holbrook Hospital’s new, federally investigated management. Leo needed a sanctuary.

“We’re moving him,” I told Dr. Lin. “To St. Jude’s. It’s an independent specialized pediatric recovery facility in a different district. Outside their immediate reach.”

Dr. Lin nodded, understanding. “Good choice. It’ll give him some stability, and you some breathing room to fight these legal battles.”

The transfer was an ordeal. I personally oversaw every detail, from the specialized medical transport to ensuring his medical records were properly transferred and protected.

Leo, still weak but showing slow signs of improvement, seemed to sense the change. His small hand gripped mine tighter during the ambulance ride.

At St. Jude’s, away from the toxic political atmosphere of Holbrook, Leo’s condition finally began to stabilize. The specialized care, the dedicated nurses, and the absence of constant familial interference allowed him to focus on healing.

After weeks of intensive monitoring and tests, the pediatric nephrologist delivered the news.

“Leo is out of immediate danger, Dr. DeWitt-Aldridge,” she said gently, flipping through his charts. “His renal function has improved significantly. However…”

She paused, her gaze softening. “The three days of severe dehydration and starvation, compounded by the toxicity of Compound AX-17, caused permanent damage. We’re seeing significant kidney scarring.”

My stomach dropped. I had known it was a possibility, but hearing it confirmed felt like a physical blow.

“What does that mean, long-term?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“Chronic renal impairment,” she explained. “He’ll require lifelong monitoring, specialized dietary restrictions, and potentially, dialysis or even a transplant in the future. It’s not a death sentence, but it is a permanent mark. He’ll always be compromised.”

I walked back to Leo’s room, my feet heavy. He was coloring a picture of a superhero, his tongue sticking out in concentration. He looked so fragile, so innocent.

I had saved him from Eleanor, exposed her cruelty, and triggered a federal investigation. But the victory felt utterly hollow. Leo would live, yes, but he would carry the scars of her tyranny for the rest of his life.

The legal battles raged on, but Leo’s little body, permanently marked, was the true cost of my pyrrhic victory.
