The hospital corridors blurred past me. White walls, fluorescent lights, the scent of antiseptic — all the familiar elements of my workplace now felt like a labyrinth designed to trap me.

I ducked into an empty supply closet near the pediatric bioethics wing, my breath rasping in my throat. Leo felt like a feather in my arms, too light, too still.

His lips were dry and cracked. A faint tremor ran through his small body.

“Just hold on, baby,” I whispered, pressing my cheek against his forehead. It felt cold, clammy.

I pulled out my cell phone, my fingers fumbling. Eleanor would have already locked down all official channels. I needed someone outside the family’s influence.

Just then, the door creaked open. A man with kind eyes and a neatly trimmed beard peered in. He wore a crisp suit, but his ID badge identified him as Dr. Marcus Lin, Visiting Independent Bioethics Auditor.

He took in Leo, the blinking monitor, and my disheveled appearance in one swift, professional glance.

“Dr. DeWitt-Aldridge?” he asked, his voice calm and steady. “I saw you in the hallway. What’s going on?”

Relief washed over me, so potent it made my knees weak. I explained in a rush, pointing to Leo’s dangerously low vitals.

“Severe dehydration, possible hypothermia,” I rattled off. “He’s been starved for three days.”

Dr. Lin didn’t flinch. He immediately pulled a small, sterile kit from his briefcase. “Let’s get him stabilized. I have an emergency IV kit. This closet isn’t ideal, but it’s better than nothing.”

He worked with practiced efficiency, his movements gentle but firm. A needle, a small vial of saline, and soon a clear tube snaked into Leo’s tiny arm.

“His electrolytes will be dangerously imbalanced,” Dr. Lin murmured, checking Leo’s pupils. “Three days… that’s criminal.”

As the fluids began to drip, a faint color returned to Leo’s cheeks. The monitor numbers nudged upwards, a tiny victory.

“My mother-in-law, Eleanor,” I said, my voice hoarse. “She did this to hide an adverse reaction to an unapproved drug. My research… the clinical trials…”

Dr. Lin paused, looking at me with a new intensity. “The Aldridge Medical Foundation’s pediatric trials? I’m here specifically to audit their bioethics compliance.”

“They’re suppressing toxicity reports,” I blurted out, the words tumbling past my lips. “For an experimental compound. Leo was part of it, and she’s been trying to hide his reaction.”

Dr. Lin nodded slowly. “That would explain a lot of what I’ve been seeing in the data logs. Dr. DeWitt-Aldridge, if you have proof of this, I can help. I’m independent. Untouchable by the Aldridge board.”

My heart, which had been in a vice-grip of fear, now pulsed with a flicker of hope. He wasn’t just stabilizing Leo; he was offering a path forward.
