Chapter 12: The Morning After

The moment Julian’s video faded to black, the gate fell. Federal marshals surged forward, their movements swift and decisive. There was no resistance from Eldon; the fight had drained out of him, leaving him a hollowed-out shell of a man. Brenda, however, let out a choked cry, stumbling back.

“You can’t do this!” she shrieked, her voice hoarse, tears streaking her mascara. “This is our family property! We’re Driscolls!”

A marshal grabbed her arm, his grip firm. “Eldon Driscoll, Brenda Driscoll, you are under arrest for fraud, elder abuse, and mail theft. You have the right to remain silent.”

The metallic click of handcuffs echoed in the night as they secured Eldon’s wrists behind his back. He stood slumped, his gaze empty, no longer meeting the horrified eyes of his family. Brenda struggled for a moment longer, then wilted, her defiance dissolving into broken sobs. They were led away, pushed into the back of a federal SUV, the door slamming shut with a heavy thud.

I didn’t watch them go. My eyes were fixed on the back of the house, on the secluded guest annex. Julian’s words, “I waited for you, my love,” repeated in my mind. He was there. I had to get to him.

I pushed past the federal agents, ignoring their calls, ignoring the hushed whispers of my disgraced family. Aunt Clara, her face stained with tears, reached out a hand, but I didn’t stop. My focus was absolute, a single-minded need to reach Julian.

My boots pounded on the frozen ground as I ran towards the annex. The lights in the main house remained dark, but a few flashlights from the marshals created dancing shadows. The annex stood silent, a small, dark shape separated from the main building.

I reached the door, my heart hammering. It was unlocked. I pushed it open slowly, my breath catching in my throat.

The room was cold, quiet, and profoundly still. The only light came from the federal vehicles outside, filtering through the windows. The air was heavy, carrying a faint, musty scent, but also something else… a stillness, a profound absence.

Julian lay on the bed, covered by a heavy quilt. He was pale, too pale. His eyes were closed. His chest was still.

“Julian?” I whispered, my voice cracking, a desperate plea.

I rushed to his side, my hands reaching for his, which rested on his chest. His skin was cold. So, so cold. My fingers brushed against a piece of paper clutched loosely in his hand. It was a letter, addressed to me.

Just then, paramedics, who must have been called by the marshals, rushed into the annex. Their faces were grim, their movements quick but somber. One of them immediately placed a stethoscope to Julian’s chest, then checked his pulse at his neck.

He shook his head slowly, his expression full of regret. “I’m so sorry, ma’am,” he said softly, his voice cutting through the ringing in my ears. “He’s gone. Appears to have passed away within the last twelve hours.”

Twelve hours. He had died just hours before I returned. Before Eldon was exposed. Before I could hold him, could tell him I was here, that I had fought for him.

My world tilted. The air left my lungs in a silent gasp. I looked at the letter in his hand. It was a single, folded sheet. And on it, in his familiar script, were just four words, underlined twice: *I waited for you, my love.*

He had waited. All that time, isolated, sick, he had held onto hope, held onto me. And I had arrived too late. The victory, the justice, the exposure of Eldon’s villainy, it all meant nothing. My sanctuary was empty. My love, gone forever.
