Chapter 17: The Porch in Oakhaven

The State Police Investigators, now armed with Clara’s recovered security logs, intensified their questioning of Deputy Roy Finch. Sheriff Vance sat in on the interrogation, his face grim, his disappointment in his deputy palpable. The pressure mounted, with prosecutors making it clear that obstruction of justice charges were on the table.

Deputy Finch, slumped in his chair, finally broke.

“I… I have something else,” he mumbled, his voice hoarse. “From that night. I didn’t mean to keep it. I just…”

He pulled out a small, encrypted USB drive from his pocket, his hand trembling. “It’s my dashcam. I was patrolling near the Holbrook lane that night. Hank had just called me, threatening the foreclosure, asking me to make sure the report went away.”

Sheriff Vance’s eyes narrowed. “What’s on it, Roy?”

Finch avoided his gaze. “Just… some footage. I usually delete them after my shift, but that night… I just put the drive in my locker.”

The state prosecutors, sensing a breakthrough, took the USB drive immediately. Within minutes, it was plugged into a computer, and the video played.

The grainy night vision footage flickered to life. It showed the Holbrook lane, dark and quiet, the patrol car parked subtly off the road, out of direct view of the house.

The timestamp in the corner read `02:15 AM`.

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the tree line bordering the Holbrook property, walking briskly down the lane towards the main road. He was carrying a black duffel bag slung over his shoulder.

The face, illuminated by the dashcam’s infrared, was unmistakable. Hank Sibley.

My breath caught in my throat. Hank. Leaving my property, minutes after Marcus had disarmed the security system and unlocked the back door. It was all there, undeniable proof. Deputy Finch’s hidden dashcam had captured the physical evidence of Hank’s presence, connecting him directly to the crime scene, and painting a clear picture of his involvement just as Marcus let him in. The truth was finally surfacing, piece by horrifying piece.
