Chapter 17: The Porch in Oakhaven

As Hank and Marcus were being led towards the entrance of the sheriff’s station, Clara broke free of my hand. Her voice, raw and cutting, sliced through the tense silence.

“Marcus!” she cried, her voice echoing across the square. “How could you? How could you sell out your own wife, your own mother-in-law, for a father who abandoned you?”

Marcus flinched, stopping dead in his tracks. His eyes, full of pain and shame, finally met hers.

Hank Sibley, however, sneered. He turned to the crowd, his voice booming. “The Holbrook land belonged in better hands! This old woman,” he gestured to me, “she was losing her mind anyway. It was for her own good, and the land’s.”

He locked eyes with me, a flicker of pure malice in his gaze. “Your husband, Arthur, always held onto that property too tight. It was time for new blood, proper management. Marcus was going to make sure of it, for the family.” He emphasized “family,” his gaze challenging.

Marcus’s face crumpled. He shook his head, tears streaming down his face.

“He threatened me, Clara!” Marcus sobbed, his voice cracking. “Hank threatened to expose my illegal land speculation, the deals I made with developers, if I didn’t help him declare Eleanor incompetent! He said he’d ruin my career, my life!”

The crowd gasped, the murmurs escalating into outright shouts.

“You knew?” Clara screamed, her voice breaking. “You knew he was your father, and you still did this to us?”

Just as the words left her mouth, as the full, awful truth hung in the air, the State Troopers moved in. Two burly officers stepped between Clara and the two men, their hands on Marcus and Hank, pushing them forcefully towards the doors.

“That’s enough, ma’am!” one Trooper commanded, blocking Clara’s path. “Step back! These men are under arrest.”

Clara struggled against the Trooper’s arm, desperate to continue, to force more answers, more confessions. “No! I need him to tell me! Tell me everything!”

But it was too late. Hank, still sneering, was shoved roughly into the transport van. Marcus, sobbing uncontrollably, was pushed into the second vehicle. The doors slammed shut with a sickening finality. The engines roared to life, and the vans sped away, leaving Clara standing there, trembling, her face streaked with tears, her voice choked.

The confrontation was cut short. No full confession, no emotional closure. Just the cold, hard reality of men being taken away, their words hanging in the air like poison. The county deputies quickly dispersed the crowd, clearing the steps, but the echoes of their twisted truths would linger forever.
