Mayor Shirley Reid’s private executive suite in City Hall was all cool marble and muted tones, a stark contrast to the buzzing energy of the city hall steps outside. She sat behind a massive, polished desk, her expression unreadable.

“Ms. Gaines,” Mayor Reid began, her voice devoid of warmth, “this media frenzy is becoming… problematic. It’s distracting from the important work of the city.”

She folded her hands on the desk. “Councilman Holloway’s behavior is certainly regrettable. To that end, I am prepared to strip him of his redevelopment committee leadership. He’ll have no further authority over projects in your district.”

I stood my ground, my hands clasped in front of me. “And what would I need to do in return, Mayor?”

Mayor Reid’s eyes narrowed slightly. “A simple agreement to dial back your media appearances. Let the legal process unfold quietly. We can handle this internally.”

The underlying message was clear. She wasn’t interested in justice; she was interested in controlling the narrative, protecting her own image, especially with her upcoming re-election campaign. A scandal involving a prominent councilman could easily splash back onto her administration.

“So, you want me to stop telling the truth?” I asked, my voice steady. “To pretend this is a minor issue, a regrettable oversight?”

“We are addressing the issue, Ms. Gaines,” she insisted, a hint of steel in her voice. “Publicly revoking his authority is a significant step. It shows accountability.”

“Accountability for him, perhaps,” I countered. “But what about the system that allowed him to do this for twenty years? What about the other businesses he’s targeted? The truth belongs to the entire block, Mayor. To the people who trusted their elected officials, who worked hard to build their lives on Auburn Avenue.”

I shook my head. “I will not sign any silence pledge. This story needs to be told, not swept under a rug.”

Mayor Reid’s lips thinned. Her expression hardened. She knew she couldn’t control me. The meeting ended shortly after, her offer of a political concession failing to secure my silence. I walked out, knowing that while Marcus Holloway was losing power, Mayor Reid was only protecting her own.
