Five Years After My Ex-Husband Abandoned Me for Being Sterile, I Walked Into His Private Dinner with a Child Bearing His Family's Supernatural Eyes
The grim reality of the Kincaid legacy settled heavily in ADA Chen’s office. The family journals, coupled with the medical evidence and Julian’s stalking payments, painted a picture of calculated, generational cruelty. Yet, a new, agonizing choice loomed.
“We have a strong case for criminal conspiracy and illegal medical administration against Julian,” Chen said, her voice steady but somber. “The grand jury is likely to indict. He’s facing prison time.”
I felt a flicker of grim satisfaction. Julian, finally brought to justice.
“But, Clara,” she continued, her eyes meeting mine, “even if Julian goes to prison, the Kincaid family has an extensive network. Generations of influence. They will never stop. They will continue to sue for custody of Lily, using every legal loophole, every well-paid expert. They’ll find ways to declare you unfit. They’ll pursue her until she is 18, and likely beyond.”
A cold dread settled in my stomach. I knew it was true. They had done it for centuries.
“The Obsidian Iris,” Chen murmured, her gaze distant. “We can’t present that in court. It’s too speculative. It risks alienating the jury, making you look exactly like Julian wants you to: a delusional woman with fanciful stories.”
Brody chimed in, “Without that, they just see a rich family wanting their heir, and a mother with a shaky record and a suspicious ‘incident’ report from a library.”
“There is only one way to legally destroy their claim, to sever Lily completely from the Kincaid legacy, from their influence, and from that… trait,” Chen finally said, her voice softening, filled with a reluctant compassion. “It’s drastic. It’s permanent. And it comes with an unbearable cost for you.”
I held my breath, bracing myself.
“We can place Lily into a closed state protective adoption program,” she explained, her gaze fixed on mine. “Under a totally altered identity. A new name, new birth records, no ties to the Kincaids. No ties to… anyone who knew her before.”
My mind reeled. “A new identity? What does that mean for me?”
Chen’s expression hardened with professional resolve. “It means you must permanently renounce all parental rights, Clara. All legal and physical custody. You will never see her again. Never speak to her. You will legally become a stranger to your own child.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. Never see Lily again? The thought was a raw, agonizing wound. My daughter, the very reason I had fought so hard, the child I had protected through homelessness and betrayal. Now, to protect her further, I would have to give her up completely.
“It’s the only way to make her truly safe,” Chen insisted, seeing the shock on my face. “To disappear her from the Kincaid radar forever. To break the chain of their family curse. You get nothing in return, Clara. No money, no contact, no recognition. Just the knowledge that she is finally, truly free.”
The world tilted. My fight to keep Lily, to raise her, had led me to this impossible, heart-shattering choice. To save her, I had to lose her. Permanently.
