Chapter 11: The Server Vault Extraction

#content-1

👉 Previous Action: Compliance auditor Marcus Lindqvist agreed to help decrypt the air-gapped server logs hiding the full text archives.

The plan was audacious, fraught with risk. The air-gapped server vault was located in a heavily secured section of Sub-Level 3, isolated from the main Aetheris Tech network. Bypassing it meant a physical infiltration and data extraction, a move that could trigger alarms and erase all their progress.

Kien and Marcus met again, this time in a dimly lit, rarely used utility closet. Marcus held a small, sleek data receiver, no bigger than a thumb drive, but capable of silently downloading gigabytes of raw data.

“This needs to be plugged directly into the server’s auxiliary port,” Marcus explained, his voice hushed. “It’s a one-shot deal. We get in, extract, and get out before anyone notices the network signature of the data transfer.”

Kien studied the schematics of Sub-Level 3, provided by Marcus. The server vault was a fortress. Direct access by either of them, given their new, scrutinized positions, was too dangerous. Security logs would flag them immediately.

“Leo,” Kien murmured, a thought forming. “The courier.”

Marcus looked up, intrigued. “The mailroom boy?”

“He has unrestricted access to almost every floor, including Sub-Level 3, for package delivery,” Kien explained. “He’s below suspicion. He carries official packages, nobody questions him.”

The idea was to transform Leo, unwittingly, into their data mule. They would disguise the data receiver as a common, innocuous piece of hardware, a “replacement part” for a server, addressed to a non-existent internal IT department. Leo would deliver it, plugging it in as instructed, without ever knowing its true purpose.

But the alternative, Kien knew, was faster, though infinitely more reckless. They could try to broadcast the partial, unverified server logs they already had onto social media, hoping to create a public outcry. It would be an act of desperation, a last resort if all else failed, and the company might just bury it before it gained traction. The risk of instant corporate retribution was immense.

Marcus studied Kien, his brow furrowed in thought. “Time is a factor, Kien. Evelyn won’t stay static. She’ll realize you’re on to her eventually.”

The weight of the decision pressed down on Kien. One path offered a calculated risk, leveraging an unwitting pawn. The other, a desperate gambit that could either expose everything or ruin them completely.

How will Kien and Marcus extract the full server logs?
