Chapter 15: The Sun on Pine Ridge

The enforcers outside the garage were still bewildered, trying to chip away at the impossible black ice. I walked straight past them, Elena right behind me. The main entrance, a regular service door, was also encased in ice. But a faint, icy glow emanated from within.

“Silas Finch!” I called out, my voice echoing in the sudden silence. “We need to talk!”

A moment later, the ice on the service door shimmered and evaporated, revealing a grim-faced enforcer. He gave me a hard look, then gestured us inside. The air inside was freezing, despite the roar of the shop’s heaters struggling to combat it.

Silas Finch sat calmly at a grease-stained workbench, surrounded by his men. He was a powerfully built man, his eyes cold and intelligent, framed by a thick head of grey hair. Gabe stood beside him, shoulders hunched, his face a mask of terror.

“Miguel Santos,” Silas said, his voice surprisingly soft, yet filled with an undeniable authority. He gestured to the only other clear spot at the workbench. “You have my attention.”

Elena wasted no time. She pulled out the printed copy of Clause 14-B and laid it flat on the grimy surface. Then, with deliberate movements, she arranged Commissioner Boyd’s bank receipts from Gabe’s account, followed by a copy of the fraudulent eminent domain order.

“Mr. Finch,” Elena began, her voice clear and unwavering, “under Pennsylvania civil law, this land, Miguel’s land, is legally free and clear of all encumbrances. The 1994 Santos Timber Indenture, Clause 14-B, clearly states that all secondary mortgages and municipal liens automatically dissolved into nullity three days ago.”

Silas picked up the Clause 14-B document, his eyes scanning the archaic legal text. He was a man of contracts, even illegal ones. He understood their power.

“This is an old agreement,” he mused, his fingers tracing the date. “Very old. But the language… it’s solid.”

“More importantly, Mr. Finch,” Elena continued, her gaze shifting to Gabe, then back to Silas, “Gabe Delgado never possessed legal title to pledge that land in the first place. He used a forged power of attorney, dated from a time when Miguel was in an induced coma.”

Gabe flinched, but Silas merely raised an eyebrow.

“Which means,” Elena pressed on, “Commissioner Harlan Boyd, by accepting a $35,000 bribe to issue a fraudulent eminent domain order and then presenting it as legitimate collateral for your syndicate’s $280,000 loan, effectively swindled *your* syndicate. He committed fraud against you, Mr. Finch, using Miguel’s land as the bait.”

A hush fell over the garage. Silas’s cold eyes, which had been fixed on the documents, now slowly lifted. He looked at Gabe, then at the thick-necked enforcer, then back to Elena. The silence stretched, heavy and menacing.

Silas Finch’s lips formed a thin, hard line. “A fraudulent land scheme,” he repeated, his voice dangerously quiet. “Against my organization.”

He leaned back, his gaze intense. His enforcers shifted, their hands unconsciously going to their pockets. The temperature in the garage, despite the working heaters, seemed to drop again.

I thought it was just a dying animal dragging trash across four lanes of freezing asphalt on Highway 220.
