The wedding band, having finished a particularly lively set, paused for the formal toasts. The master of ceremonies, a jovial man in a tuxedo, was just stepping up to the head table bandstand, adjusting the microphone.
But before he could say a word, Marcus Chen, seeing his chance, moved swiftly. He walked straight past the security guards, who were momentarily distracted by Dr. Vance’s presence, and took the wireless microphone from the stand.
The master of ceremonies looked utterly bewildered, his mouth agape.
“Excuse me, everyone!” Marcus’s voice boomed over the ballroom speakers, crisp and clear, cutting through the light hum of conversation. “If I could have your attention for just a moment.”
Two hundred pairs of eyes turned towards him. The room, which had been buzzing with polite chatter, fell into an immediate, profound silence.
“My name is Marcus Chen,” he announced, his voice carrying the authority of an experienced reporter. “I’m with the Chicago Tribune.”
He held up the blue folder, its pages thick with evidence.
“I have a brief public document reading regarding the Holloway Family Educational Endowment.”
Victoria, who had been laughing nervously beside Julian, dropped her champagne flute. The delicate crystal shattered on the marble floor with a sharp, echoing *CRACK*.
Every single head in the room swiveled. The spotlight was now completely on Marcus, on the document in his hand, and on the name Holloway. Arthur looked as if he might faint, his eyes wide and vacant. Julian looked utterly horrified, already calculating the reputational damage.
The air grew thick with anticipation, heavy with the unspoken knowledge that something catastrophic was about to unfold.
