Chapter 15: Epilogue: The Following Sunday

Friday evening. The mansion’s grand library was an oasis of hushed opulence, filled with the scent of old leather and polished wood. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn, and a single, ornate brass lamp cast pools of soft light on the mahogany desk. This was Julian’s favorite room, his sanctuary.

I stepped inside.

Julian stood by the large safe embedded in the wall behind the desk, his back to me. He was meticulously packing bundles of what looked like crisp, untraceable bearer bonds into a sleek leather briefcase. The metallic click of the safe tumblers was the only sound.

He didn’t turn around immediately, but the slight stiffening of his shoulders told me he knew I was there. He had arranged this meeting, a final, private confrontation before he enacted whatever his next move was.

The heavy oak doors swung shut behind me with a soft, padded *thud*. They locked automatically, an old security feature of the house. No one outside would hear us. No security guard or family member was present. Just Julian and me.

The air in the soundproofed room grew heavy, charged with unspoken accusations and years of bitter history. The bearer bonds, a fortune in illicit gains, lay exposed on the desk.

Julian finally turned, a predatory glint in his eyes. He carefully closed the briefcase, snapping the latches shut. He picked it up, cradling it like a trophy.

“Father,” he said, his voice low and confident. “You finally decided to come to your senses? Ready to accept my offer and disappear?”

A faint smile played on his lips, an unsettling mix of triumph and contempt. He thought he had won. He thought I was here to concede, to accept his bribe and walk away.

I said nothing, my gaze fixed on the briefcase in his hand. The millions he had stolen, ready to be whisked away, untraceable. He had set this scene, believing it would be his final, unchallenged victory.

He gestured to the plush leather armchair opposite the desk. “Come, sit. Let’s discuss the terms of your retirement. I’m feeling generous tonight. Maybe a private jet for your departure?”

The irony was thick enough to taste. He was offering me a golden cage, while holding the keys to his escape. He had no idea the cage was for him.

The silent confrontation stretched, the only sound the quiet tick of the grandfather clock in the corner. Julian’s smile broadened, mistaking my silence for surrender.

“No?” he asked, a hint of steel entering his voice. “Still holding onto your delusions of grandeur, Daniel? You have nothing. No job, no money, no reputation. Just the empty moral high ground you stand on.”

He gestured to the briefcase. “This is the future, Father. Untraceable. Unstoppable. What do you have?”

I simply stood, observing him, letting him bask in his self-assured delusion. The silence was a weapon, waiting for its moment to strike.

If you touch that ledger, Daniel, I will make sure you end up back in federal bankruptcy court with nothing left to your name.
