Panic erupted across the grand ballroom. The thunderous applause for my medal abruptly cut off, replaced by a cacophony of shouting, flashing cameras, and urgent whispers. Journalists surged forward, their microphones thrust toward Admiral Callahan. Board members leaped from their tables, their faces a mixture of horror and confusion.

Julian, his face a mask of absolute terror, finally moved. He stumbled off the stage, abandoning the podium, his eyes darting frantically toward the nearest exit. The private catering entrance, usually unseen, was now his only hope.

He lunged for the service doors, pulling one open with desperate force. But before he could slip through, two figures in dark suits materialized, blocking his path. Federal marshals. They moved with quiet efficiency, their expressions grim.

“Julian Harlow,” one marshal stated, his voice calm but firm. “You are under arrest by order of the United States Department of Justice.”

Julian froze, his body rigid. He tried to speak, but only a choked sound escaped his throat. The second marshal moved quickly, producing a pair of heavy, iron handcuffs.

“You have the right to remain silent,” the marshal began, his voice cutting through the rising din. “Anything you say can and will be used against you…”

The metallic click of the handcuffs snapping shut echoed even over the noise of the crowd. Julian struggled, a raw, animal sound tearing from his throat.

“Father!” he screamed, his eyes fixed on Arthur, who remained motionless on the floor, amidst the glittering shards of his shattered crystal glass. “Call our lawyers! Do something!”

But Arthur didn’t move. He sat there, a broken man, staring blankly at the floor, his once-proud face now ashen and empty. The reality of Julian’s betrayal, and his own catastrophic liability, had utterly paralyzed him. He was a statue of despair.

The marshals, unimpressed by Julian’s pleas, quickly escorted him back into the center of the ballroom, parading him, handcuffed and struggling, past the stunned board members, past the flashbulbs, and out the front doors of the Waterside Grand Ballroom. The crowd parted, a silent, gaping maw, as Julian Harlow was led away, his corporate empire crumbling around him in full public view.
