My Landlord Tried Evicting Me After My Parents Died — Then My Late Father's Dog Uncovered a Metal Box in the Yard That Exposed a 30-Year Secret
The case moved swiftly after that. My appointment at the District Attorney’s office connected me with Detective Marcus Brody, a man whose serious demeanor matched his sharp, analytical eyes. He had the quiet intensity of someone who missed nothing.
Detective Brody reviewed the mountain of evidence: Dao-Ming’s ledger, Yu-Chen’s audio recording of Frank, the forged equity release form, the altered deed, and now, the bank records detailing the $300,000 drained from David Chandler’s trust fund. He sifted through the cashier’s checks endorsed by Frank Gable.
“It’s a textbook case of multi-layered financial extortion and deed fraud, Ms. Lin,” Brody stated, leaning forward in his chair. His voice was calm, methodical.
“Our forensic accountants have already started tracing Frank Gable and Mei-Ling Lin’s offshore accounts. The numbers match up precisely with the payouts from Mr. Chandler. It’s a clear pattern of criminal enterprise spanning decades.”
A chill ran down my spine. The vastness of their scheme, stretching back to before I was even born, was almost inconceivable.
“Based on the evidence, we’ve secured a court order,” Brody continued, his gaze unwavering. “As of this morning, a legal wiretap has been placed on Frank Gable’s phone. We believe he’s getting desperate. He’ll make a mistake.”
He paused, then looked at me directly. “We need one more piece, Ms. Lin. A live confession. An affirmation of his ownership claim, on record.”
“How do we get that?” I asked, my voice dry.
“You’re going to confront him,” Brody said. “Alone. In his office. We’ll be listening in, recording everything. You need to make him believe he’s finally won. Make him boast. Make him drop his guard and confirm his claims over the property and his involvement.”
The thought sent a wave of icy fear through me. Confront Frank Gable, alone, in his own den? The man who had cut my water, tried to get me fired, and now I knew, had helped steal my future.
“It’s risky,” Brody acknowledged, as if reading my thoughts. “But we need it to solidify the case. His admissions, combined with the wiretap evidence, will be enough to secure a felony arrest and indictment.”
He slid a small, innocuous-looking device across the table. It was no bigger than a car key fob. “This is a discreet audio recorder. Activate it when you enter. We’ll be outside, monitoring everything. Don’t worry. We won’t let anything happen to you.”
A final, private confrontation. A trap, set to ensnare a predator. And I was the bait.
