I am stopping this wedding before my family merges with a thief, groom Andre Dupree announced, his voice echoing across the silk-draped ballroom as he pulled out a stack of bank audits.
My refusal of Julian’s $5 million offer cemented my path. There was no turning back. The federal prosecutors now had an open and shut case. I felt a sense of grim satisfaction. Julian would finally pay.
But just as I felt the pieces falling into place, a new, unsettling detail emerged, twisting my understanding of everything once again.
Special Agent St. James called me, his voice carrying a note of bewilderment.
“Mr. Pembroke,” he began, “we’ve been monitoring wiretaps on Julian Pembroke’s known associates. We intercepted some unusual audio. Not Julian, but… your daughter, Maya.”
My heart gave a lurch. Maya? What could she possibly have to do with Julian’s associates now?
“Maya?” I repeated, a cold knot forming in my stomach. “What did she say?”
“It’s not what she said now, but what she said weeks ago,” St. James explained. “Before the wedding. Before Andre Dupree’s little display. We have recordings of her meeting privately with Andre in a parking garage. A very discreet location.”
Andre. The groom. My mind reeled. Maya had claimed Andre was a manipulative opportunist, but she had met with him privately?
“The conversation,” St. James continued, “clearly indicates they were planning the public wedding confrontation together. Not just the part about Andre’s shell company, but the entire spectacle. Maya was coaching Andre on what to say, what documents to bring. She specifically mentioned wanting to ‘trigger a regulatory audit of Pembroke Holdings’ to ‘expose Julian’s financial misdealings’.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. Maya, planning this with Andre? The innocent victim, coerced by Julian, now seemed like a master puppeteer. The tears, the fear she showed me in her Buckhead apartment… was it all an act?
“She… she planned the wedding confrontation?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “To trigger an audit?”
“Yes,” St. James confirmed, a note of professional detachment in his voice. “The recordings are quite clear. It seems she orchestrated the entire incident. She wanted to use Andre to publicly expose Julian, thinking it would open the door for federal investigation.”
I hung up the phone, my hand trembling. My daughter. My brilliant, ambitious daughter. She hadn’t stumbled into Julian’s machinations; she had actively sought to expose him. But for what ultimate purpose?
My initial belief, that she was a courageous daughter protecting her father, shattered. This was a calculated, cold-blooded maneuver. It wasn’t about me. It was about Julian. And it was about Pembroke Holdings.
The bait, the misunderstanding, the carefully constructed narrative of victimhood — it all dissolved. Maya wasn’t just turning over evidence. She was playing a much larger game, one I was only just beginning to comprehend. My daughter was not who I thought she was.
