Chapter 19: Two Weeks Later

As I navigated the glittering ballroom, keeping Evelyn in my sights, I felt a sudden shift in the atmosphere. A ripple of nervous energy spread through the crowd near the main entrance. My intuition screamed that Evelyn had been tipped off.

Just as I prepared to move closer to Evelyn, a burly security guard stepped in front of me, blocking my path. Beside him stood Councilman David Chen, his face a mask of strained politeness, though his eyes held a steely glint.

“Ms. Holloway,” Chen said, his voice curt. “I’m afraid there’s been a slight issue with your invitation. We’ll have to ask you to leave.”

The personal cruelty here was the public attempt to remove me, to single me out amidst the glamorous crowd, implying I was an unwelcome intruder. It was a deliberate effort to shame and isolate me, reinforcing Evelyn’s narrative of my “instability.” The casual dismissal of my presence, as if I were a common gatecrasher, was a stinging insult.

My heart hammered, but I kept my expression calm. “My invitation is valid, Councilman. I am a legitimately invited guest.”

“We’ve received information that suggests otherwise,” Chen insisted, his voice hardening. He then gestured subtly to the security guard, who took a step closer. “For the smooth running of the event, it would be best if you departed quietly.”

Evelyn, who had been observing from across the room, now began to approach, a triumphant, venomous smile playing on her lips. She obviously orchestrated this. She wanted to make a public example of me.

“Is there a problem, David?” Evelyn asked, her voice dripping with feigned concern, but her eyes, when they met mine, held pure malice.

“Just a slight misunderstanding, Evelyn,” Chen replied smoothly, not meeting her gaze directly. “Ms. Holloway seems to believe she’s still welcome here.”

A wave of fear threatened to engulf me, but I pushed it down. This was Evelyn’s game, designed to humiliate me and prevent the confrontation. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction.

“My invitation is valid,” I repeated, pulling a small, official-looking card from my clutch. “I am here as a guest of Marcus Thorne, Albright Entertainment’s prospective partner. Perhaps you should confirm with him.”

Chen’s face stiffened. Marcus Thorne was a name that carried significant weight, even for Evelyn. Mentioning him as my direct host threw a wrench in Evelyn’s plan. The Councilman hesitated, clearly unwilling to challenge the studio executive publicly.

Just then, the event manager, a harried-looking woman named Sarah, rushed over, having overheard the commotion. She recognized me from various industry events.

“Is everything alright here, Councilman?” Sarah asked, her eyes darting between us.

“Ms. Holloway is attempting to disrupt the proceedings,” Chen quickly asserted, trying to regain control. “She needs to be escorted out.”

“Disrupt?” I countered, my voice clear and calm, despite the frantic beating of my heart. “Or am I merely a guest that Mrs. Albright finds inconvenient?”

I subtly gestured towards Evelyn, who had stopped a few feet away, her smile now frozen. The public accusation, even indirect, made several nearby guests turn their heads, their whispers starting to spread.

Sarah, the event manager, looked at my invitation, then at Chen, then at Evelyn, who was now visibly bristling. The tension in the air was palpable. She seemed to weigh the potential fallout of evicting a guest of Marcus Thorne versus offending Evelyn.

Finally, she made a decision. “Councilman, Ms. Holloway’s invitation appears to be in order. And a guest of Mr. Thorne is certainly welcome.”

She looked at me, a flicker of something sympathetic in her eyes. “Please, Ms. Holloway. Enjoy the evening. Let’s not make a scene.”

Chen looked furious, but he couldn’t openly defy the event manager without creating an even larger spectacle. Evelyn’s face contorted into a mask of barely suppressed rage. Her carefully laid plan to publicly eject me had backfired spectacularly.

“Very well,” Chen bit out, stepping aside. “But any further disruption will not be tolerated.”

I gave him a polite nod, then met Evelyn’s furious gaze. Her eyes blazed with a murderous intent, but I merely offered her a small, tight smile. She had tried to silence me, but I was still standing, still present, and still armed with the truth.

The victory, however small, was exhilarating. I had breached her defenses, overcome her attempt to control the narrative. The stage was set, and Evelyn’s desperation was now clear for all to see.
