I Took a Caretaking Job in Calder Flats to Save a Bedridden Patient — Until I Found Her Real Medical File and What Our Neighbor Did to Her
The state troopers moved quickly. Silas Montgomery, still whimpering apologies and denials, was cuffed and led out into the raging blizzard. Arthur Pendelton, the insurance adjuster, was found hiding in his car, half-frozen and equally terrified, and was promptly arrested as well. The chaos outside was a stark contrast to the urgent, quiet drama unfolding within the cabin.
“Clara!” Jonah’s voice was sharp, pulling me back to Rue. “She’s crowning!”
With the immediate threat removed, my focus snapped back to my patient. The cabin was still freezing, but the arrival of the police meant a flicker of hope for outside medical aid. For now, it was just me.
“Push, Rue, push!” I urged, my voice firm. “You’re doing so well. Just a little more!”
Rue, exhausted but fueled by a sudden surge of adrenaline and the primal instinct of motherhood, bore down. Jonah was at her side, holding her hand, his face a mixture of terror and fierce love. Ellen Finch, still shaky from her ordeal, provided what assistance she could, holding a lantern steady.
The storm outside began to recede, the first faint hint of grey light breaking through the eastern sky. And then, with one final, powerful push, a cry echoed through the cabin.
A baby’s cry.
“It’s a girl!” I announced, tears stinging my eyes as I carefully delivered the tiny, healthy infant into Jonah’s waiting arms. She was perfect, small but strong, her skin rosy, her lungs letting out a furious wail.
Jonah’s face, etched with worry for months, broke into a raw, unfiltered sob of relief and joy. He cradled his niece, burying his face in her soft, downy head. Rue, though utterly spent, managed a weak smile, her eyes shining with love for her newborn daughter.
As the storm finally cleared, revealing a world blanketed in pristine, sparkling white, the sounds of rescue vehicles grew louder. Paramedics and medical teams, now able to reach Calder Flats, burst into the cabin. They quickly assessed Rue and her baby, confirming they were both stable and strong, against all odds.
Silas Montgomery and Arthur Pendelton were loaded into separate police cruisers, their faces grim. Justice, swift and undeniable, had arrived with the dawn.
