The CEO Who Slashed My Bonus Didn't Realize I'd Already Sent Her Rival Two Words That Would Topple Her Empire
Mara’s fury was palpable even through the formal language of the cease-and-desist letter. It arrived by courier, a thick envelope adorned with the logo of a high-powered corporate law firm. I opened it with a detached curiosity, knowing it was merely a desperate bluff.
The letter was a multi-page indictment of my character and actions. It accused me of “egregious corporate espionage,” “breach of fiduciary duty,” and “unlawful solicitation of clients.” It demanded that I immediately halt all competitive actions against Kingston Dynamics and return any “confidential information” I supposedly possessed.
The threat of a multi-million-dollar lawsuit loomed large, along with a promise to “personally ruin Eleanor Vance’s reputation and ensure she never works in the industry again.” It was pure Mara: aggressive, intimidating, and designed to instill fear. Her personal cruelty was now manifesting in legal threats.
I read the letter slowly, a small, grim smile playing on my lips. She truly believed this was about corporate espionage, about me “stealing” clients through illegal means. She still had no idea about Amelia Davies, about the ledger, about the true source of her downfall. Her misunderstanding was breathtaking.
I immediately forwarded the letter to Arthur Sterling, attaching a brief note: “Mara’s getting desperate. She’s reaching for legal action, still missing the big picture.”
Arthur called me within minutes, his voice calm, even amused. “A predictable move, Eleanor. Cornered animals lash out.”
“She truly believes I’m breaching contract or bribing clients,” I confirmed. “She thinks this is a simple, cut-and-dry case of corporate theft.”
“Which is why it’s a bluff,” Arthur stated. “She has no real evidence of espionage. And even if she tried to pursue it, a thorough investigation would only lead back to her own dirty laundry.”
He explained, “This is meant to intimidate you, to scare you into backing off. She wants you to fold, to disappear, just like Amelia Davies did. She doesn’t want any official legal scrutiny of her company, because she knows what it will uncover.”
The irony was not lost on me. Mara was threatening legal action, completely unaware that the real legal threat was looming over her, a direct consequence of her own past crimes. She was walking straight into her own trap.
“Don’t respond to it, Eleanor,” Arthur advised. “Don’t acknowledge it in any way. Let her believe she’s put a scare into you. It will only make her overconfident and lead to more missteps.”
“So we continue with the plan?” I asked, my resolve unwavering.
“More aggressively than ever,” Arthur affirmed. “Her legal threats confirm her desperation. It tells us she’s feeling the pressure and has no other legitimate recourse. Now is the time to tighten the screws.”
I hung up the phone, the cease-and-desist letter still on my desk. It was Mara’s final, desperate attempt to assert dominance, to wield the only power she truly understood: intimidation and legal bullying. But I was no longer the same Eleanor Vance she had dismissed in her office weeks ago.
Her personal cruelty in trying to ruin me again, to ensure I never worked in the industry, only fueled my determination. I had faced worse, and I had survived. This was just another obstacle, another indication of her growing panic.
I picked up the letter again, reviewing its harsh accusations. It was a projection of her own fear, her own guilt, her own crumbling world. She was accusing me of the very things she herself was guilty of: unethical practices, disregard for contracts, and a malicious intent to destroy.
The lawsuit itself would be a messy, protracted affair, exposing Kingston Dynamics’ internal vulnerabilities. It would also, inevitably, expose Mara’s past. She was so blinded by her present paranoia that she couldn’t see the catastrophic implications of her own actions.
I knew this was a turning point. Mara had thrown her biggest punch, and it had landed with the impotent force of a desperate gambler. She had escalated the conflict, moving it from reputation to potential ruin, but she was aiming at the wrong target. My silence would be my answer, and my continued actions would be her undoing.
