Marcus didn’t waste a moment. He began to read, his voice calm but firm, the words amplified across the entire ballroom.
“This is the Evelyn Holloway Educational Trust Agreement, dated April 12th, 2004.”
He read the key clauses, one by one.
“Clause 2a: ‘Purpose of Trust: To provide for the comprehensive medical education and living expenses of Clara Holloway.'”
The murmurs began immediately, a low, buzzing sound that grew steadily louder.
“Clause 7b: ‘The Power of Attorney granted to Arthur Holloway shall automatically and irrevocably expire upon the beneficiary, Clara Holloway, reaching the age of twenty-eight (28) years, or upon her obtaining full medical licensure, whichever occurs first.'”
A collective gasp swept through the room as the guests realized the full implication. Arthur’s control was gone.
“And finally,” Marcus continued, his voice unwavering, “a record of a wire transfer, dated twenty-one days prior to this event, for the sum of two hundred ten thousand dollars ($210,000).”
He paused, letting the numbers hang in the air.
“This transfer,” Marcus stated, his gaze sweeping across the stunned faces, “was initiated from the Evelyn Holloway Educational Trust account directly to the Highland Park Country Club, to cover the final balance for this evening’s reception and catering services.”
The ballroom erupted. Shocked murmurs turned into outright exclamations. Guests stared, their faces a mix of disbelief and indignation, at Arthur and Victoria.
Arthur stood frozen near the elaborate, multi-tiered wedding cake, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides. He was unable to move, unable to speak, utterly unable to defend himself. His eyes darted around, searching for an escape, but there was none.
Society members, people he had cultivated relationships with for decades, began whispering behind cupped hands. Some openly pointed. The facade of the generous, respectable patriarch had shattered into a million pieces, exposed as a thief and a liar. The shame was suffocating.
