My Commercial Tenant Seduced Me to Take My Workshop — Then My Wife Divorced Me, Took the Business, and Left a Note That Revealed Everything
With Arthur’s sworn affidavit officially notarized, I finally had the hard evidence needed to challenge Brenda and her family. But I didn’t have to make the first move. Claire’s meticulous planning had already set the dominoes in motion.
An anonymous tip, containing Claire’s detailed financial audits from the Bar Harbor safe, had reached the state banking examiners.
The next morning, sirens wailed through Oakhaven, not for me, but for the municipal center. Two unmarked state vehicles, official seals gleaming, pulled up to the Town Hall.
State banking examiners, sharp-suited and humorless, marched straight into Lyle Finch’s office. News traveled instantly.
Within the hour, panicked whispers turned into shouted arguments in the municipal parking lot. Lyle and Harlan Finch stood outside the workshop, their faces ashen, their usual bluster replaced by frantic despair.
Brenda’s truck was parked beside Harlan’s municipal vehicle. She stood there, cool and collected at first, but then I saw her shoulders stiffen.
“They froze my personal accounts!” Lyle shouted, his face purple. “Mine and Harlan’s! Said it was ‘suspicious cross-collateralized mortgage guarantees’ attached to Finch Commercial!”
Harlan’s voice was high-pitched. “The bank examiners are looking at everything, Brenda! Every loan, every property transfer. They’ve tied our family mortgages to your annex entity. Said it looks like a shell game!”
Brenda’s composure began to crack. Her lips thinned. “It’s just a temporary hold, a misunderstanding.”
“Misunderstanding? They’re talking about fraud! Felony fraud!” Lyle was practically spitting. “They linked my Oakhaven Yacht Club membership dues to your business expenses! They know about the backroom deals!”
He shoved his hands through his already messy hair. “My reputation is ruined! My council seat… this will destroy me!”
Harlan, usually so rigid, looked like a frightened boy. “They said if we don’t cooperate, if this insurance claim goes through, they’ll seize everything. Our houses, our savings! Our entire lives!”
His voice dropped, desperate. “Brenda, you have to withdraw the insurance claim. Now! Before they find out about the, about the… you know!”
He didn’t explicitly say “arson,” but the implication hung heavy in the air.
Brenda stared at her brothers, her eyes blazing with fury. Her carefully constructed empire, built on lies and manipulation, was crumbling around her. Her brothers, her loyal cronies, were turning on her. The Finch front, once impenetrable, was cracking under the weight of state scrutiny.
