Chapter 17: Three Days Later

At 7:15 PM, the Grand Hyatt Ballroom’s house lights dimmed, signaling the start of the main event. Derrick Caldwell, beaming with practiced confidence, stepped up to the crystal podium. The Bloomberg TV cameras zoomed in, capturing his polished facade. He began his keynote address, detailing the firm’s “historic” quarterly earnings, his voice smooth and resonant, filling the room.

His words were hollow, a performative charade.

Outside, parked discreetly in a service alley, the broadcast control truck hummed with power. Gabriel Ramos, his face tight with concentration, sat amidst a tangle of wires and monitors. He inserted an encrypted flash drive directly into the main satellite link feed, bypassing the venue’s local AV lockouts with the ease of a master hacker. He didn’t touch the local screens, leaving Derrick’s TelePrompTer display undisturbed for now. The feed was rerouted, silent and invisible.

Behind the stage curtains, a different kind of tension simmered. Detective Ruiz, his expression unreadable, coordinated with four uniformed police officers. They took their positions at every exit door, their presence unnoticed by the captivated audience.

On stage, Derrick raised a gleaming glass of champagne. “To the founding legacy of Montgomery Financial,” he declared, his voice booming with false magnanimity, “and to an even brighter future!”

He smiled, prepared for the wave of applause. The audience began to clap.

Then, imperceptibly at first, something shifted. Derrick’s smile faltered. His eyes, fixed on the TelePrompTer, narrowed slightly. The scrolling text of his speech, meant to be his anchor, had suddenly flickered black.

In its place, a single, stark red warning prompt filled the screen: “UNAUTHORIZED INTERFERENCE DETECTED. LIVE BROADCAST FEED COMPROMISED.”

Derrick blinked, his hand still holding the champagne glass aloft. He glanced around the stage, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. No one in the audience seemed to notice the anomaly on his private screen. Not yet.

He tried to recover, to pivot, but his next words caught in his throat. The room still buzzed, but the underlying current was about to change. The stage was set. The trap was sprung.

I signed the transfer papers, Sarah. If I didn't, Derrick said he would turn off my oxygen tank, my mother whispered, pressing a cold metal micro-cassette recorder into my hand inside the locked...
