I signed the transfer papers, Sarah. If I didn't, Derrick said he would turn off my oxygen tank, my mother whispered, pressing a cold metal micro-cassette recorder into my hand inside the locked...
Derrick, his face a mask of primal fury, lunged past the bewildered security guards towards me. “Give me that phone!” he roared, his voice hoarse from adrenaline.
Just as his hand stretched out, a new presence cut through the chaos. The revolving doors spun, and Detective Marcus Ruiz of the Chicago Police Financial Crimes Division stepped into the lobby. Four uniformed officers fanned out behind him.
Ruiz, a man whose presence commanded immediate attention, held up a hand. “Mr. Caldwell, I believe we have an audio recording that requires your immediate attention.”
My eyes met Gabriel’s. He had sent the audio file, just as we planned. Twenty minutes. That was all it took for the system to start moving.
Derrick stopped short, recognizing the Detective. His initial rage morphed into a desperate attempt at control. “This is a fabrication! An AI-generated deepfake designed to sabotage the company’s valuation before the annual vote!” he stammered, frantically waving his hand towards the speakers.
Detective Ruiz remained calm, his gaze sweeping over the scene. He looked at the agitated employees, their phones still recording. He looked at the pale, unnerved security guards.
“Mr. Caldwell,” Ruiz said, his voice flat and authoritative. “The audio contains specific background chime frequencies. They are unique to the building’s 14th-floor clock, a detail corroborated by multiple witnesses.”
A murmur went through the crowd. The specific chime frequencies. That was a detail no AI could easily replicate, no simple fabrication could explain away.
“This provides immediate probable cause,” Ruiz continued, his eyes fixing on Derrick, “to inspect Ms. Eleanor Lawson’s physical condition upstairs, and to detain you for questioning regarding the alleged threats.”
Derrick’s jaw worked, his eyes darting wildly. His legal papers, moments ago his shield, now seemed to crumble in his hands. He tried to wave them. “These are valid court orders! You can’t interfere with medical transport!”
“The medical transport is now frozen,” Ruiz countered, his voice leaving no room for argument. “Officers, secure the perimeter. No one leaves this lobby.”
The uniformed police officers moved with swift efficiency, fanning out and establishing a clear boundary. The security guards, caught between their employer and the law, slowly backed away.
Derrick Caldwell, COO of Montgomery Financial, a man who had orchestrated an empire of lies, was cornered. His carefully constructed boardroom siege had just been breached, not by force, but by a chilling audio recording and the simple chime of a clock.
