Chapter 16: Two Weeks Later

The air in the dining room crackled with anticipation. Julian’s lead attorney began to speak, droning on about “misunderstandings” and “corporate administrative reviews,” a thinly veiled attempt to dismiss the spendthrift clause as an arcane technicality.

Harrison Montgomery, however, rose calmly. He held a single, cream-colored envelope.

“Gentlemen, and ladies,” Harrison announced, his voice carrying gravitas, “before we delve into legal arguments, I have here a document that I believe clarifies Mr. Julian Winthrop’s intentions beyond any doubt.”

Julian visibly stiffened. He glanced around, trying to discern the origin of this new threat. His eyes landed on me, a flicker of suspicion there.

Harrison extracted a folded sheet of paper. “This is a hand-written confession, signed by Julian Winthrop himself. It details his intentional plot to strip Maya Winthrop of her rightful inheritance, to conceal his $38,000,000 in offshore speculative debts, and to systematically undermine the Winthrop Capital board through forged proxy votes.”

Julian’s face went from pale to ashen. His jaw dropped. “That’s a lie!” he sputtered, half rising from his seat. “A fabrication!”

But Harrison was already reading excerpts, his voice steady. ” ‘I admit to creating Valiant Holdings to siphon company funds…’ ‘I intended for Maya Winthrop’s trust to be dissolved upon my mother’s incapacitation…’ ‘I forged Michael’s signature to ensure my unchallenged authority…’ ”

The room descended into a stunned silence. Julian’s attorneys stared at their client, bewildered and betrayed. Julian himself looked as if he’d been struck. He knew Chloe had done this. He could feel her betrayal from across the city.

The eldest family elder, a stern-faced woman named Agnes, cleared her throat. “Mr. Montgomery, the implications of this confession, coupled with the previously presented forensic audit and the 1924 charter, are undeniable.”

She turned to Julian. “Julian, you have violated every principle of this family and this foundation. The 1924 spendthrift clause, as detailed, automatically strip-votes your shares and transfers your remaining equity directly into Maya Winthrop’s protective trust.”

Julian’s eyes widened in horror. “My shares? To Maya? You can’t!”

“It is already done, son,” Agnes stated, her voice cold. “The automated system, triggered by the documented violations, has executed the transfer. Furthermore, the extended family council, in a unanimous private vote this morning, has stripped you of all executive titles. Effective immediately.”

There would be no public trial, no scandal to mar the Winthrop name. Just a quiet, absolute dismantling, enforced to preserve the brand Julian had so recklessly endangered. His empire crumbled around him, not with a bang, but with the rustle of a hidden letter and the quiet hum of an ancient clause.
