Chapter 16: Two Weeks Later

The email arrived exactly two hours before the officially scheduled emergency board meeting. It was from Julian, marked “URGENT – Board Re-scheduling.”

“Due to unforeseen technical issues,” the email read, “the board vote will now commence at 8:00 AM sharp, via secure virtual network. All physical access to the boardroom is temporarily suspended for system upgrades.”

He was trying to lock me out. He knew I’d gathered evidence, and he was attempting to force a vote while I was stranded, unable to present my case. He had probably compromised the corporate network, ensuring my access would be denied.

I looked at the clock: 7:50 AM. Ten minutes.

Harrison was already in the executive suite, waiting.

“He’s trying to strong-arm a vote,” I told him, showing him the email. “He thinks he can control the narrative virtually.”

“He forgets,” Harrison said, a glint in his eye, “that some things still require physical presence.”

We walked down the hushed hallway to the boardroom. A young, nervous IT technician was fumbling with a “Closed for Maintenance” sign on the door.

“The meeting is virtual, Mrs. Winthrop,” he stammered, blocking the doorway with his body. “Mr. Winthrop’s orders.”

“Move,” I said, my voice cutting through his protest. My gaze, steady and unwavering, met his. He hesitated, then stepped aside.

Inside, the vast mahogany table was empty, but the central screen glowed, showing a list of attendees already logged in: Julian, his personal legal counsel, and several of the more compliant board members.

Julian’s face, projected large on the screen, went white when he saw me, Harrison, and two senior trust members walk into the room, taking our seats at the table. He had expected an empty room. He had expected me to be locked out, figuratively and literally.

“Mother?” he sputtered, his virtual composure cracking. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m attending the board meeting, Julian,” I replied, my voice calm. “In person.”
