The heavy pulse of the drills continued above, a rhythmic counterpoint to the profound silence in the vault. I walked over to my briefcase, which had fallen open in the dust, and retrieved the stack of forged documents and smear dossiers Arthur had used against me. The fake bank statements, the false press releases, the doctored emails – all the weapons in his arsenal.
I laid them gently on the iron table, beside the authentic 2009 codicil that had exposed the truth. The contrast was stark, devastating. Lies and vindictiveness laid bare next to a testament of selfless love.
“Arthur,” I said, my voice quiet but firm, my fingers still intertwined with his. “I forgive you. Truly.”
His eyes, still red-rimmed, widened further. He opened his mouth, but no words came out, only a shaky breath.
“I will not press charges against you,” I continued. “I will not seek legal restitution. My father gave everything to save you. He wouldn’t want me to destroy what he saved, or to perpetuate this bitterness.”
I looked at Dominic Cross, who had been silently observing the entire exchange, his notebook resting on the table. He nodded slowly, his expression serious.
“Dominic,” I said, “I hope you will publish the true story. All of it. My father’s sacrifice, and how it came to light here, today.”
Dominic’s gaze flickered between Arthur and me. “I will, Clara. An exclusive feature. The truth of your father’s noble sacrifice will be known, and your name will be completely cleared across all news networks.” He began writing, his pen scratching softly on the page, capturing the turning point. The public record, so viciously manipulated by Arthur, would finally be set right.
