Cassidy sat silently in the crowded dining hall of the Millfield Community Center as her ex-mother-in-law dumped a bucket of ice-cold floor wash over her head.
The emergency 9:00 AM town council hearing was packed. Every seat in the Millfield Community Center auditorium was taken, with standing room only along the walls. The air buzzed with a nervous energy, a palpable anticipation.
I walked to the microphone, alone, carrying a single USB stick. Council President Vera Higgins sat stiffly at the head of the table, her face unreadable. Lyle Bramford sat opposite, flanked by Brendan and Diane, all looking tense.
“Good morning,” I began, my voice clear and steady. “My name is Cassidy Hollister. And I’m here to present evidence regarding Mr. Lyle Bramford’s proposed developments and his current activities in Millfield.”
I inserted the USB stick into the council’s projector. The large screen behind Vera Higgins flickered, then came to life.
First, I projected the 2014 Stark County forum thread. Page after page of desperate pleas from Ohio farmers, detailing how “Bramford Holdings” had used identical appraisal fraud to steal their land. The scanned bank receipts for cash kickbacks flashed across the screen.
A collective gasp went through the audience.
Next, I displayed Arlo Finch’s forged notary logs, side-by-side with the official Pennsylvania Department of State document showing his notary commission had been revoked in November 2022. The legal voidness of Lyle’s paperwork was undeniable.
Then, the final image: the lab report from Knox County, confirming the presence of industrial degreaser—toxic chemicals—in the dirty floor wash poured over me. And a map of Lyle’s unpermitted renovation site, where the chemicals were stored.
As I finished speaking, the side door to the auditorium swung open. Two men in official-looking jackets, carrying clipboards, walked purposefully down the aisle.
They approached Lyle Bramford directly. One of them, a stern-faced man, handed Lyle a formal document. “Mr. Lyle Bramford,” he stated, his voice ringing through the silent hall. “You are hereby served with a halt-work order for environmental violations at 170 Millfield Road. State property inspectors will be assessing the site immediately.”
Lyle’s face went ashen. He crumpled the paper in his hand.
Just as the room erupted in murmurs, a chair scraped back at Lyle’s table. Jessica Palmer, Brendan’s new partner, stood up. Her eyes, usually so composed, were wide and frantic. She looked at Lyle, then at Brendan, then back at the council.
“He told me to do it!” she blurted out, her voice cracking, echoing through the microphone Lyle had been using just moments before. “Lyle Bramford ordered me to plant those doctored police logs on the Millfield Matters group! He told me to make sure Cassidy’s reputation was destroyed!”
She pointed a trembling finger at Lyle. “He planned all of it! He gave me the documents, told me what to post, what to say. He threatened me if I didn’t cooperate!”
The auditorium exploded. Whispers turned into shouts, shouts into an undeniable roar of outrage. The live broadcast chat scrolled wildly, a torrent of condemnation. Lyle Bramford, exposed and surrounded, looked utterly defeated.
