The Lockwood Industries boardroom buzzed with an air of suppressed tension. Polished mahogany gleamed under crystal chandeliers, reflecting the grim faces of the board members. Silas Lockwood sat at the head of the table, his usual imperious calm tinged with a faint, brittle edge.

Mr. Charles Davison stood at the opposite end, his demeanor radiating quiet authority. He held a neat stack of documents, unassuming in their appearance, yet humming with the weight of truth. The board members shifted in their seats, exchanging nervous glances.

“Gentlemen,” Davison began, his voice clear and resonant, “we are here today to discuss matters of grave importance to the future and integrity of Lockwood Industries. Specifically, certain… discrepancies concerning the family’s investment trust and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Miss Eleanor Lockwood.”

Silas scoffed loudly, a dismissive sound that echoed in the high-ceilinged room. “Discrepancies? Nonsense, Davison. My daughter’s health is a private family matter, and you, sir, are overstepping your bounds.”

Davison met Silas’s gaze unflinchingly. “With respect, Mr. Lockwood, when a family matter directly impacts the financial stability and ethical standing of a public company, it ceases to be entirely private.”

He laid out the copied codicil on the table, pushing it towards the nearest board member. “As you can see, this codicil to Eliza Lockwood’s will stipulates that Eleanor would inherit a controlling stake in the family’s primary investment trust upon her eighteenth birthday, unless deemed permanently medically incapacitated.”

A murmur rippled through the room. The board members, many of whom had served under Eliza, knew the implication. A “medically incapacitated” heiress meant Silas retained control.

“A perfectly legal and prudent measure!” Silas thundered, his face beginning to redden. “Eliza wished for Eleanor to be protected, should her unfortunate condition make her incapable of managing such vast responsibilities.”

“Protected, or dispossessed, Mr. Lockwood?” Davison countered, his voice sharp. He then presented the copied ledger pages. “These entries, spanning twelve years, meticulously detail a ‘Regimen’ for Eleanor Lockwood, including specific chemical compounds and dosages. All initialed, I might add, by Silas Lockwood himself.”

He continued, “And these payments, also detailed in the ledger, were made to a defunct entity named Sterling Chemical Co. A company that, according to my preliminary investigations, specialized in obscure chemical agents.”

The boardroom erupted in hushed whispers. The sheer weight of the evidence, presented so methodically, was undeniable. Silas, caught in the net, sprang to his feet, his chair scraping violently against the floor.

“This is outrageous! Slander! Fabrication!” Silas roared, his carefully constructed composure finally shattering. “Davison, you are a senile, disgruntled old man! A revenge-seeker, still bitter from that land dispute fifteen years ago! You’re grasping at straws, attempting to extort money, to undermine my authority!”

He turned to the board, his voice pleading, then hardening. “He is a relic, gentlemen! A bitter, incompetent lawyer seeking to tarnish the Lockwood name out of spite! Do you truly believe this drivel?”

The board members looked from the enraged Silas to the calm, collected Davison. The personal attack, Silas branding Davison a “senile, disgruntled old man,” was designed to discredit, to shame. It was a vicious, unprovoked assault on Davison’s character.

Davison merely waited for Silas’s outburst to subside, his expression unwavering. “My reputation, Mr. Lockwood, is well-established. Your desperation, however, is new.”

The board was visibly unsettled. Some looked away, uncomfortable. Others whispered, their faces etched with doubt. Silas’s fury, though powerful, lacked the cold, hard logic of Davison’s presentation. The accusations were grave, and the evidence, though preliminary, was too specific.

“This is a witch hunt!” Silas bellowed, his voice hoarse with rage. “A conspiracy to undermine Lockwood Industries! I demand that this… this charade be ended at once!”

He slammed his fist on the table, making the crystal water glasses jump. He was cornered, and the board could see it. His desperate denials, his personal attacks on Davison, only served to strengthen the growing suspicion in the room. The empire was trembling.
