Chapter 20: Solitude and Strength

Garrett’s hands were like vises around the locket’s chain, pulling, twisting. The silver pressed into my throat, suffocating me, its metal burning. His face was inches from mine, contorted with a terrifying blend of rage and desperate greed.

“It’s mine!” he shrieked, his voice raw, fueled by an insane hunger. “My legacy! My power! You won’t destroy it!”

I clawed at his hands, desperate to break free, gasping for air. The locket felt like a branding iron, searing my skin. The fear for my baby, so potent and visceral, fueled a surge of adrenaline.

“You’re wrong, Garrett!” I choked out, my voice hoarse. “It’s a curse! It wants your firstborn! It wants *my* baby!”

His eyes, wild and unseeing, seemed to register my words for a fleeting moment. A flicker of genuine terror crossed his face, quickly replaced by a furious denial. He pulled harder, yanking the locket’s chain.

“No! You lie! You just want it for yourself!” he screamed, his grip tightening. He wouldn’t believe the truth, even when it stared him in the face. His obsession was too deep.

Just as he raised his other hand, a devastating blow about to fall, the front door of Mrs. Albright’s cottage burst open with a deafening crash. The sound made us both freeze.

My head snapped towards the sound. Standing framed in the doorway, their faces etched with horror, were my parents. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes. They had come.

“Amelia!” my mother screamed, her voice piercing the tense silence. Her eyes were wide, fixed on Garrett’s hands around my throat, on the glint of the locket.

They rushed into the kitchen, their eyes still locked on the terrifying scene unfolding. Mrs. Albright, recovering from Garrett’s shove, was already moving towards him, her face set with grim determination. Clara huddled in the corner, frozen.

My father, Mr. Hayes, his face a mask of furious disbelief, charged at Garrett. He was usually a calm, reserved man, but the sight of his daughter being attacked ignited a protective rage.

“Garrett! Get away from my daughter!” he roared, grabbing Garrett’s arm.

Garrett, startled by the sudden intrusion, momentarily released his grip on the locket. The chain fell loose around my neck, and I gasped, sucking in much-needed air.

He spun around, lashing out wildly. “Stay out of this, old man! This doesn’t concern you!”

But my father held firm, a surprising strength in his grip. Mrs. Hayes, seeing the locket’s malevolent glow, its silver pulsing faintly in the dim kitchen light, let out a terrified scream.

“That locket!” she cried, her eyes wide with a dawning horror. She had never believed me before, but now, seeing Garrett’s violence and the locket’s unsettling shimmer, the truth was undeniable.

“Leave her alone, Garrett!” she shrieked, her voice filled with a mother’s fierce protection. “Leave our daughter alone, you monster!”

Garrett struggled, trying to pull free from my father’s grip. He was cornered, exposed, his madness laid bare for my parents to witness. The image of his wild fury, his attempts to physically harm me, confirmed everything I had told them—and more.

My parents, the ones who had initially dismissed my fears, now saw the full, horrifying extent of Garrett’s depravity and the sinister power of the locket. Their intervention, unexpected and timely, interrupted the climax before it could reach its violent conclusion.

The confrontation was cut short, the immediate threat diffused by their presence. But Garrett’s rage still simmered, his eyes still burning with a dangerous fire. This was not over. But I was no longer alone.
