Chapter 20: Solitude and Strength

Garrett’s explosive outburst at the baby shower left me reeling, the image of his wild eyes and manic accusations seared into my mind. I spent the rest of the day in a numb haze, trying to process the chaos.

Later that night, long after Mrs. Albright’s remaining guests had awkwardly departed, a frantic knocking startled me. It was well past midnight. My heart leaped into my throat.

I crept to the door, peering through the peephole. My breath hitched. Standing on my porch, soaked to the bone from the pouring rain, was Clara. Her face was pale, streaked with tears and rain, her body trembling uncontrollably.

I quickly unlocked the door, pulling her inside. “Clara! What happened? You’re soaking wet!” I cried, concern overriding my fear.

She stumbled in, collapsing onto my small entry rug, shivering violently. “Amelia,” she choked out, her voice barely a whisper, ragged with fear and exhaustion. “I had to come. I had to.”

Her clothes were torn, her hair plastered to her face. She looked like she’d been through a nightmare. “What happened?” I asked again, helping her up.

“The locket,” she gasped, clutching my arm. “It almost killed me tonight, Amelia. I just saw… I saw what it does. I saw *him*.”

“Garrett?” I asked, guiding her to the sofa. I quickly grabbed a towel, wrapping it around her shivering shoulders.

“He’s completely lost it,” she whispered, huddling under the towel. “After he left your… your party, he came back to the house. He was raving. Screaming at the locket, screaming at thin air.”

“He thinks the locket’s spirits are ‘coming for him’,” I murmured, remembering his words at the shower.

“He does,” Clara confirmed, her eyes wide with terror. “He was convinced *I* was working against him, too. He thought I was helping the ‘spirits’ punish him.”

She shivered again. “He threw me out. Said I was part of the problem. Said I deserved whatever ‘they’ did to me.”

“Oh, Clara,” I said, a wave of pity washing over me. Despite everything, she was still a victim of his madness, too.

“But before he threw me out,” she continued, her voice gaining a desperate urgency, “I heard him. He was talking about a journal. A hidden one. His great-aunt’s.”

My head snapped up. A journal? The idea, a physical document, a specific secret, felt like a lifeline.

“He mentioned it briefly before, weeks ago, when he was obsessed with finding the locket,” she explained, her breath still coming in ragged gasps. “He said it had ‘the key’ to everything. But he couldn’t find it.”

“Where did you find it?” I urged, my mind racing. Mrs. Albright’s stories about the Finch family and their firstborns clicked into place. This could be the answer.

“His old room,” Clara said, her eyes darting around my apartment as if Garrett might appear. “He had some old things, boxes from his childhood. I remembered him saying he ‘hid it where no one would look’.”

“He always kept his most valuable things tucked away in the most obvious places,” she added, a bitter laugh escaping her. “Behind a loose baseboard in his old closet. He thought he was so clever.”

She reached into her soaked purse, her hand trembling. With a visible effort, she pulled out a small, leather-bound book. It was old, its cover worn smooth with age, its pages thick.

“It’s old, in some kind of code,” she whispered, pressing it into my hands. It felt cool, dry, and surprisingly heavy. “But I think it explains everything about his family and that locket.”

“He was always looking for clues, for rituals,” she continued, her voice raw. “He was convinced the locket belonged to him, that it would give him unimaginable power. He didn’t understand what it *really* was.”

“He doesn’t understand the cost,” I murmured, clutching the journal. Mrs. Albright’s words about the firstborns resonated deeply.

“He thinks it just wants to be reunited with its true owner,” Clara said, shaking her head. “He thinks he can control its power. But it’s beyond his control, Amelia. It’s evil.”

“You risked everything for this,” I said, looking down at the journal, then back at her tear-strestreaked face. “Why, Clara?”

She met my gaze, her eyes surprisingly clear despite her fear. “Because it almost killed me tonight. And because you’re pregnant, Amelia. I saw the bruise on your belly, the other day when you changed for the doctor.”

My breath caught in my throat. She had noticed. She had seen the locket’s cruel mark.

“I didn’t want to believe it, but after seeing him, seeing what he’s become, and what this locket is doing…” she trailed off, shuddering. “I don’t want to be a part of it anymore. And I don’t want your baby to be next.”

Her words were a profound act of defection, a monumental shift in loyalty. She had chosen to do the right thing, driven by fear, but also by a clear, undeniable moral compass.

“You need to decipher it quickly, Amelia,” she urged, her voice low and desperate. “Before he realizes it’s gone. He’ll come looking for it. He’ll come looking for you.”

She handed me a crumpled, water-stained piece of paper. “I found this tucked inside. It’s a key. An old family cypher. I think it’s for the code.”

I stared at the journal, then at the cypher. My hands trembled as I clutched the precious documents. This was it. This was the turning point. The physical evidence, found by accident, just as the outline specified.

“Thank you, Clara,” I whispered, relief and fear swirling within me. “Thank you for risking your life.”

She simply nodded, her eyes still haunted. “Just protect your baby, Amelia. Protect your baby from him. And from that thing.”

Her fear, so raw and honest, served as a stark warning. Garrett would be coming for this journal. And he would be more desperate, more dangerous than ever before. The climax was rapidly approaching.
