Chapter 20: Solitude and Strength

The bruise on my belly, a physical testament to the locket’s malevolence, was a constant, terrifying reminder. Garrett’s desperation had clearly opened a gateway, and the curse was moving from whispers to physical manifestation.

A week later, Mrs. Albright hosted a small baby shower for me. It was a kind gesture, meant to be a moment of joy and support. I tried to push my fears aside, to bask in the warmth of the few friends who attended.

The living room was filled with soft chatter and the gentle clinking of teacups. Mrs. Albright’s house felt like a temporary haven. For a brief moment, I almost forgot the threats, the nightmares, the bruise.

Then the doorbell rang, a sharp, unwelcome chime that shattered the fragile peace. Mrs. Albright, looking surprised, went to answer it. A gasp rippled through the room.

It was Garrett.

He stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He wore stained, wrinkled clothes, a stark contrast to his usual pristine appearance. He looked like a man who hadn’t slept in days, haunted and frayed.

“Amelia!” he bellowed, his voice raw, cutting through the polite chatter. “Where is she? She stole my family’s legacy!”

The few guests, mostly Mrs. Albright’s friends and a couple of my old classmates, turned to stare. Their faces registered shock, then discomfort. The cozy atmosphere evaporated instantly.

I stood frozen, clutching a small baby blanket a friend had just gifted me. My heart hammered against my ribs. This wasn’t an appearance; it was an invasion.

“Garrett, you are not welcome here,” Mrs. Albright said, stepping forward, her voice calm but firm, trying to block his entry. “This is a private event.”

He pushed past her, his gaze fixated on me. “She stole it, Eleanor!” he screamed, his voice filled with a desperate, unhinged fury. “She stole my luck! And now they’re coming for me!”

“They?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. He looked utterly deranged, a man on the brink.

“The spirits!” he shrieked, his eyes wide and unfocused, darting around the room as if he saw unseen entities. “The ones the locket controls! They’re turning on me because she has it!”

He pointed a trembling finger at me. “She’s sabotaging my life! She’s making them punish me! She wants to ruin me!”

His accusation, uttered in front of sympathetic guests, was a calculated act of public slander. He was painting me as a malicious witch, blaming me for the locket’s retaliation.

“Amelia is not doing anything of the sort,” Mrs. Albright interjected, stepping between us, trying to shield me. “Garrett, you need to leave. Now.”

“No!” he yelled, pushing past her, his desperation lending him surprising strength. “She’s unstable! She’s crazy! She thinks the locket is cursed! She’ll ruin everything, including the baby!”

His words were a mirror of the legal threats, designed to undermine my credibility. But this time, they were delivered with a raw, terrifying intensity that went beyond mere manipulation. This was a breakdown.

“She is keeping my family’s power from me!” he wailed, flailing his arms wildly. “They’re going to take me! They’re going to take everything!”

He was speaking of a “deeper, shared supernatural threat,” as outlined, but his frantic delivery was chilling. He truly believed he was being hunted by the locket’s forces.

Some of the guests began to murmur, looking uncomfortable. A few started to back away, grabbing their purses, clearly wanting to escape the scene. My few allies were being scattered.

“Garrett, please,” I pleaded, my voice cracking. “This isn’t helping. You need to calm down.”

“Calm down?” he roared, laughing hysterically. “How can I calm down when my life is falling apart because of you? You took my inheritance! You took my protection!”

He lunged forward, not towards me directly, but towards a small antique vase on Mrs. Albright’s mantelpiece, knocking it to the floor with a crash. Shards of ceramic scattered across the rug.

It was an act of pure, undirected rage, a specific, petty cruelty that marred Mrs. Albright’s home. It was a demonstration of his complete loss of control, a man undone by his greed and the curse.

“Get out, Garrett!” Mrs. Albright finally snapped, her patience worn thin. “Get out of my house right now, or I’m calling the police!”

He paused, his eyes still darting wildly around the room. The mention of police seemed to momentarily break through his manic state. He glared at me one last time, a look of pure hatred.

“This isn’t over, Amelia,” he snarled, his voice a low, venomous whisper. “You haven’t seen the last of what this locket can do. And neither have I.”

Then, he spun on his heel and stormed out, slamming the front door behind him with a thunderous bang that rattled the windows. The silence he left behind was heavy, oppressive.

Mrs. Albright rushed to my side, her hand on my arm. “Amelia, are you alright?” she asked, her voice filled with concern.

I could only nod, tears streaming down my face. My baby shower, meant to be a celebration, had been shattered. Garrett’s public outburst, his accusations, had further isolated me.

He was truly unhinged, driven to the brink by the very power he sought to control. And his final threat, hinting at the locket’s escalating power, sent a fresh wave of terror through me.

This wasn’t just a confrontation anymore. This was a full-blown war. And Garrett, in his desperation, was more dangerous than ever.
