👉 Previous Decision: You chose to pretend full compliance and attempt to climb into a junior management role.
I plastered a smile on my face, nodding vigorously at Arthur’s instructions. “Absolutely, sir. Peak performance. Full compliance.”
He watched me with narrow eyes, a faint twitch at the corner of his mouth. “Good to hear, Leo. Diligence is rewarded at Apex.”
I started taking on extra tasks, volunteering for late shifts, trying to impress him. I researched company policies, memorized reports from Arthur’s desk, and made sure my performance metrics were impeccable, even with the daily void. I believed I could outsmart him, that a promotion would give me access, a wider view of the company.
One Tuesday morning, Marcus Devlin, the Chief Security Officer, called me into his office. The room was cold, sterile, with a single muted monitor displaying security camera feeds. He didn’t offer me a seat.
“Leo, there’s been an… anomaly,” Marcus said, his voice flat. He pushed a printout across the table. It was a fabricated expense report, showing transfers from a company discretionary fund directly into an offshore account. My name was signed at the bottom, clumsily forged. The amount: $125,000.
My breath caught in my throat. “This isn’t mine. I never signed this.”
Marcus leaned forward, his eyes devoid of warmth. “Our internal audit team found it. A new employee with rapid ambition. A quick way to make a name, eh?”
The door clicked open and Arthur stepped in, his expression grim. “Leo, I’m disappointed. Gross misuse of company funds. And the press…” He shook his head slowly. “Apex Analytics has a reputation to uphold.”
My mind raced. This was a setup. A public smear campaign followed, headlines screaming about “delinquent fortune hunters” and “teenage greed.” My credit score, already fragile, plummeted to zero. The path to power had become a trap, closing around me.
