Chapter 9: A New Dawn, A New Year

The sterile air of my hospital room pressed down on me, but the bitterness in my mouth wasn’t from the medication. It was from a truth I was still struggling to swallow.

Silas Croft, ever the meticulous estate manager, stood by my bed, a thin file clutched in his hand. He hadn’t slept much, I could tell.

“Asher,” he began, his voice low, “I’ve reviewed the prenuptial agreement. Every clause.”

I nodded, my gaze fixed on his face, waiting for the inevitable. Each beat of my heart felt heavy, a drum counting down to more heartbreak.

“There’s an unusual amendment,” he continued, adjusting his glasses. “A ‘loyalty bonus’ for Genevieve.”

I blinked, not quite comprehending. Loyalty? After everything?

“It states,” Silas clarified, his brow furrowed, “that if you were to… pass away… within five years of your marriage, her inheritance would triple.”

A cold knot of dread tightened in my stomach, chilling me more than any IV drip. Triple. Not just my fortune, but three times the already generous settlement.

“She pushed for this,” Silas added, his voice barely audible, “shortly after your wedding. A few months in.”

My mind raced back. I remembered the conversation, vaguely. Genevieve had said it was “just a formality,” a way to “solidify our future, darling.” I’d laughed it off, trusting her completely.

Now, that memory twisted into something sinister. It wasn’t about our future. It was about her future without me.

“She planned this from the start,” I whispered, the words rasping in my throat. The initial shock of betrayal was giving way to a colder, harder anger. “This wasn’t opportunistic. This was calculated. Every single step.”

Silas remained silent for a moment, letting the weight of the revelation settle between us. He understood.

“The amendment was discreetly added,” he finally said. “Buried deep in the legal jargon, almost impossible to spot unless you were looking for it specifically.”

He tapped the file. “It suggests a level of premeditation far beyond what we initially considered.”

My hands clenched into fists beneath the thin hospital blanket. Genevieve hadn’t just taken advantage of my love. She had engineered my demise, setting the stage for her lavish payout.

“So, my early death,” I muttered, a dark humor bubbling up, “was worth a premium.”

Silas gave a grim nod. “It appears so, Asher.”

The air in the room felt thick with unspoken accusations. My youthful idealism, my belief in love and grand gestures, had been systematically dismantled.

“What’s the next step,” I asked, my voice flat, “to expose her? To make sure she never touches a single cent of what she thinks she’s owed?”

Silas looked at me, a flicker of professional determination in his usually composed eyes. “We need concrete proof of intent, Asher. Something undeniable that ties her directly to the poisoning.”

He leaned closer. “The prenup clause is highly suspicious, yes, and strong motive. But we need to connect her hand to the act.”

“Maya,” I said, remembering her gentle nature, her kind eyes. “She makes my tea. She prepares my food.”

“Precisely,” Silas confirmed. “We need to investigate every angle, every person who had access.”

He flipped open his notebook. “I’ll start by discreetly interviewing the household staff. See if anyone noticed anything out of place, any unusual requests from Genevieve regarding your meals or drinks.”

My gaze drifted to the window, the city lights blurred beyond the pane. Outside, the world was still turning, oblivious to the insidious plot unfolding within these walls.

“She was so convincing,” I said, my voice tinged with a weariness that went beyond physical exhaustion. “She made me believe she loved me. That all this… all this wealth… was just a bonus, not the goal.”

Silas placed a hand gently on my arm. “She preyed on your trust, Asher. But her greed is also her weakness.”

“She made sure I signed that prenup before our anniversary, didn’t she?” I asked, a fresh wave of sick realization washing over me. “The grand gesture of trust, she called it.”

“Indeed,” Silas confirmed. “Three months ago. Well within the five-year window of this specific clause.”

The irony was a bitter pill. I had signed it to show her she could trust me, that my money wouldn’t be an issue. She had used that trust to sign my death warrant.

“We need to move quickly,” I insisted, my voice gaining strength. “She’ll realize I’m still fighting. She’ll get desperate.”

“I am already working on amending your will, as you requested,” Silas assured me. “But that’s only half the battle. We need to expose her fully.”

He straightened up. “I’ll make some discreet calls to Maya and the other staff today. Without raising suspicion, of course.”

“Just tell me what you find,” I said, a new, steely resolve settling in my chest. “No matter how bad it is.”

Silas nodded, his expression solemn. “You have my word, Asher.”

He turned to leave, but paused at the door. “We’ll get through this, Asher. We will.”

I watched him go, the hospital room feeling emptier than before. The image of Genevieve’s chilling smile, her casual confession, now merged with the cold reality of her calculated betrayal. She wanted my fortune, but she wouldn’t get it. Not if I had anything to say about it. And even from this hospital bed, I still had plenty to say.
