When 68-Year-Old Eleanor Delaney Celebrates Her $4.5M Firm's Anniversary, Her Adult Son Unleashes Wild Bees To Sabotage Her, But Her Rescue Malinois Max Exposes The Plot, Unravelling Legal Warfare...
The heavy oak garden patio doors slammed open, and Julian Montgomery stood there, framed by the bright morning light.
He was already shouting.
“This is unacceptable, Claire! I found Barnaby near cocoa powder. You endangered my inheritance!”
Leo, still holding a small, muddy trowel, clung to my leg. Barnaby whimpered softly from where he lay on the grass, a dark stain near his nose. The air, which had been so fresh and sweet moments before, now felt thick with Julian’s anger.
I met Julian’s furious gaze, my own face carefully blank. Accusing him, as I longed to do, would only make things worse right now. Not without proof.
“Julian, please,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, pulling Leo closer. “Let’s get Barnaby to the emergency vet first. That’s all that matters.”
Julian’s jaw tightened. He glanced at Leo, then back at me. He expected me to panic, to cry, to break.
He mistook my quietness for weakness.
“Don’t think this changes anything,” Julian hissed, stepping onto the patio. “You and Leo are out. This estate, the trust, it’s all tied to me, not some… some incidental step-family.”
His words hung in the air, a familiar threat. He wanted the $5 million trust for himself. Getting rid of Leo and me was his direct path.
A discreet cough came from behind me. It was Sarah, my younger sister, who had just walked into the garden, her phone in her hand. She had a knack for appearing exactly when needed.
“I can take Barnaby,” Sarah offered, her voice calm, already bending down. “I’ll call the emergency clinic right now.”
Julian barely registered her. “Father will hear about this,” he sneered, looking past me toward the house, as if summoning Richard with his thoughts.
I nodded almost imperceptibly at Sarah, a silent instruction passing between us. She understood.
As Sarah carefully lifted the Corgi, Barnaby let out another soft whine. She gave me a quick, meaningful glance, then walked purposefully towards the garage where the cars were parked.
Julian didn’t notice the subtle exchange, too wrapped up in his own outrage. He was already rehearsing his story for Richard, no doubt. The perfect picture of an aggrieved son.
I knew Sarah would do more than just drop Barnaby off. She would get the official intake report, the one that would tell us exactly what had happened and when.
That report was our first step, our only hope.
