I retreated to my room, the official veterinary report now feeling like a useless scrap of paper in my hand. Julian had truly outmaneuvered me. He’d not only dismissed the evidence but used its very existence to portray me as a conniving opportunist.

A soft squawk broke my thoughts. Echo, the family’s pet Amazon parrot, bobbed his head in his cage near the window. He was a vibrant splash of green and yellow, his cage meticulously maintained. On a small perch above his water dish, barely noticeable, was a tiny, automated motion-activated camera. Richard had installed it years ago, supposedly to “monitor the air quality” and “record Echo’s speech patterns.” In reality, it was just another one of his many surveillance quirks.

Sarah, sensing my despair, entered quietly, a determined glint in her eyes. “Aunt Beatrice sounded pretty convinced,” she observed, picking at a loose thread on my rug. “Julian’s good at that.”

“He said I’d forged it,” I said, a bitter taste in my mouth. “That I had an ‘accomplice’ to help me make false documents.”

Sarah’s eyes widened slightly. She paused, then slowly looked up at Echo’s cage. Her gaze lingered on the camera.

“Wait a second,” she murmured, a new thought sparking. “Julian said he found Barnaby near the patio doors, right? And the vet report says 10 AM.”

She walked over to the parrot’s cage, her fingers tracing the tiny lens. “This camera,” she said, almost to herself. “It points directly at the patio doors and a good portion of the garden path. Richard never turns it off.”

“It’s always recording,” I confirmed, “but it overwrites old footage quickly. Maybe a day or two at most.”

Sarah was already pulling out her portable hard drive from her backpack. “It also saves a compressed, lower-resolution copy to an auxiliary drive for long-term archiving. Richard always thinks of everything, even if he doesn’t know *why*.”

She quickly plugged her drive into a small port on the side of the camera unit. Her fingers flew across her keyboard, a flurry of commands scrolling across her screen. The parrot watched her, tilting its head, occasionally mimicking a faint “Hello?”

After what felt like an eternity, but was probably only ten minutes, Sarah froze. Her breath hitched.

“Claire,” she breathed, her voice barely audible. “You need to see this.”

She rotated her laptop screen towards me. On it, perfectly crisp, high-definition video played. It was 10:00 AM, the exact moment the vet report pinpointed. Julian walked onto the patio, carrying a small, dark bottle. He knelt beside Barnaby’s food bowl. He unscrewed the cap, and with a swift, deliberate movement, poured a thick, dark liquid into the Corgi’s dish.

Then, Julian looked up. His eyes, cold and calculating, fixed directly on the window where Echo’s cage and the camera sat. He held the gaze for a beat, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk playing on his lips, as if he knew he was being watched, but didn’t care. As if he was performing for an unseen audience, confident in his impunity.

My blood ran cold. He hadn’t just poisoned Barnaby. He’d *known* about the camera. He’d done it anyway, right in plain sight, with a chilling defiance.

“He’s not just framing me,” I whispered, the words catching in my throat. “He’s taunting us.”
