Chapter 12: A New Beginning

The smell of rich Italian herbs filled the dining room that evening, usually a comfort, but tonight it felt like a suffocating shroud. Julian held court, dramatically recounting Barnaby’s collapse, painting me as neglectful, almost malicious. Richard listened, his expression unreadable, occasionally glancing at me over his crystal wine glass.

“She left him unattended,” Julian insisted, his voice mournful. “Right next to that… that powder. It’s a miracle Barnaby is even alive.”

Aunt Beatrice dabbed her lips with a linen napkin, her eyes, usually warm, now held a cool skepticism. Uncle Thomas simply grunted, his gaze fixed on his plate. They were buying Julian’s performance.

Then, a quiet buzz from under the table. My phone.

Sarah.

I excused myself, stepping into the dimly lit hallway. Sarah was already on a video call, her face illuminated by her laptop screen, a triumphant glint in her eyes. Barnaby, looking a little groggy but alert, was curled up on a blanket behind her.

“Got it, Claire,” Sarah whispered, holding up a printed document. “The official intake sheet from the emergency vet.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “And?”

“This is the kicker,” she said, zooming in on a section. “It explicitly states the vets estimated the ingestion time of the dark chocolate extract. Based on symptom onset, bloodwork, everything.”

She tapped the screen, highlighting a timestamp. “Ten AM. Exactly ten AM.”

I stared at the numbers. My mind raced.

“But Leo,” I murmured, “Leo was at kindergarten at ten AM. He gets dropped off at eight-thirty.”

“Exactly,” Sarah confirmed, a small smile playing on her lips. “I cross-referenced it with the kindergarten’s daily attendance log. He was definitely there.”

The contrast was stark, almost cinematic. Julian’s accusations painted me and Leo as reckless, the cause of Barnaby’s distress. But the cold, hard facts of the veterinary report said something entirely different.

Leo, Barnaby’s closest companion, was nowhere near the garden at 10:00 AM. This wasn’t an accident caused by a child. This was something else entirely. Julian’s timeline was a lie, and the medical record proved it.

“This changes everything,” I said, a new kind of resolve hardening my voice. “This isn’t just about Julian framing me. This is about a calculated deception.”
