I forced myself to breathe, the metallic tang of fear sharp at the back of my throat. Raynor Pryce watched me, his expression unreadable, those stacks of fraudulent legal documents a physical weight on the countertop.

He expected me to break. To sign.

My hands trembled, but I walked toward the kitchen counter, my eyes scanning the polished granite, the seamless cabinetry. I reached for the pen he offered, my fingers brushing his for a fraction of a second. His skin felt cold.

“Just initial each page,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “Then we can discuss the… transition of assets.”

My jaw ached from clenching. Assets. My life’s work. My home.

I nodded, my gaze sweeping past the blank screen of the main control panel, the one he probably thought I’d be desperate to access. But I had built this house. Every circuit, every hidden access point, was known to me.

My fingers grazed the smooth surface beneath the upper cabinets, just beside the professional-grade espresso machine. A tiny, almost invisible seam. No one would ever notice it unless they knew it was there. Julian certainly never had.

This wasn’t the primary admin interface. This was my personal, deeply buried diagnostic override panel, a failsafe I’d designed years ago for system-level debugging, never imagining I’d need it to save my own skin.

My thumb pressed down, triggering the haptic feedback. A soft, almost inaudible click echoed in the silent kitchen, masked by the low hum of the refrigerator.

Raynor didn’t even flinch. He was too busy watching my face, probably looking for signs of defeat. He saw a woman about to sign away her life.

He didn’t see the tiny flicker of blue light reflecting in the polished surface of the granite. The display was recessed, designed for discrete access. My fingers moved, practiced and quick, entering the master override diagnostic code. Twelve digits. A pattern I could type blindfolded.

The system acknowledged it with another silent haptic pulse.

My access was now active. Not just as a user, but as the architect of the entire network, bypassing the very administrative lockout Raynor had imposed.

A surge of cold, focused calm washed over me. He thought he had me cornered, my digital life seized. He had no idea I still held the master key to his undoing.

He tapped a finger on the stack of papers. “Anything you want to add before you commit?” he asked, a hint of something like amusement in his tone.

I met his gaze, my hand resting casually over the hidden panel, the tiny screen now showing a schematic of my home’s intricate sensor network. “Just that I’ve always been very particular about my paperwork,” I said. “Every detail has to be just right.”

He smirked, clearly misinterpreting my meaning. Let him. He was about to learn just how particular I could be.

The real game had just begun.
