Chapter 12: Epilogue on the Following Sunday

I swallowed the sudden knot in my throat, the one that tasted like sea salt and betrayal. My sister, Sandra, stood there, beaming, oblivious to the storm brewing inside me.

“So, Brenda, darling, it’s all set,” she declared, her voice echoing a little too loudly in my small, unfinished living room.

She gestured grandly around the dusty space, as if it were already transformed into her vision of a luxury event.

“Twenty-two guests, remember? Tyler’s promotion is a huge deal. This little cottage is just perfect for it.”

A tight smile pulled at my lips. My “little cottage” was still missing curtains, and the faint scent of old dust clung to everything.

I watched her dump a designer overnight bag, far too large for a weekend stay, onto the only clean armchair. It was a bold splash of color against the faded floral upholstery.

“You really went all out,” I said, trying to keep my voice even. The words tasted like ash.

“Only the best for my son!” Sandra chirped, pulling a small, embossed card from her purse. “Chef Julian Rossi, a real culinary artist. And the rental company for the tables and tents? Top-notch. I even splurged on that artisanal ice sculpture Tyler loves.”

She held the card out to me. I took it, my fingers brushing against the heavy stock. It listed a website and an email address.

“How much did all this cost, exactly?” I asked, looking at the card.

She waved a dismissive hand. “Oh, a drop in the bucket! Don’t worry about it, it’s all handled.”

My gaze flickered to her oversized bag. A corner of white paper protruded from the side pocket. It looked like an invoice.

“Handled how?” I pressed, my voice still light. I needed specifics.

Sandra paused, her smile faltering just a fraction. She glanced towards the kitchen, then back at me.

“Well, naturally, I put it on your card,” she said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “You have such a high limit, and I just used the account details you had on file for the utilities here. So convenient!”

My stomach lurched. Account details *on file*. The very same details I had provided to the realty company just last week for my modest water and electricity hookups.

“My card?” I repeated, letting a hint of disbelief enter my tone. “Sandra, that’s not how…”

“Relax, Brenda,” she interrupted, already moving towards the kitchen. “It’s just for a few days. Tyler deserves the best. We’ll sort it out later, I promise.”

She disappeared into the kitchen, already rummaging through the cabinets, probably looking for a champagne flute that didn’t exist in my humble new home.

This was my chance.

I walked casually towards the armchair, my heart thumping against my ribs. I picked up Sandra’s bag. It felt heavy, clearly packed for more than just overnight.

My fingers deftly dipped into the side pocket. The paper was stiff, a proper invoice, not just a crumpled receipt. I pulled it out, trying to appear as if I were simply adjusting the bag.

It was from “Ocean Breeze Catering & Events.”

The total jumped out at me: “$7,850.00.” Below it, a scrawled signature: “Brenda Dempsey.”

My signature. But it wasn’t mine. The looping ‘B’ was too large, the ‘D’ too sharp.

My eyes scanned the list of items: “Lobster thermidor,” “Prime rib carving station,” “Artisanal cheese tower.” This was beyond a simple party. This was a gala.

I slipped the invoice back into the bag as I heard Sandra’s footsteps returning.

She reappeared, holding up a chipped mug with a triumphant grin. “Found one! Now, where’s that Prosecco I know you have stashed away?”

I managed to offer her a strained smile. “No Prosecco, Sandra. Just instant coffee. And that invoice…”

I tried to sound casual. “For Chef Rossi. Is there another one for the rentals?”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, a flash of something guarded. “Why? I told you, it’s all handled.”

“Just curious,” I said, feigning a relaxed shrug. “A party this size, in my little cottage… I just want to be sure everything is properly documented.”

She hesitated, then sighed, retrieving a second, even larger envelope from another pocket of her bag.

“Fine, Brenda. Always with the paperwork.” She tossed it onto the coffee table, a light film of dust instantly clinging to it. “Rentals, lights, sound system. Another few thousand, but it’s all part of the celebration!”

I picked it up, my fingers trembling slightly. The total was even higher. “Event Essentials: $7,150.00.”

Another signature, another forgery. The total was over $15,000.

I nodded, the smile fixed on my face. “Right. Well, I’m just going to… organize these.”

I clutched the two invoices, the paper rustling softly. My mind raced, already formulating the next steps. I wouldn’t let her destroy my fresh start. Not again.
