Chapter 12: Epilogue on the Following Sunday

The moment Chef Rossi finished speaking, a ripple of disgust spread through the crowd. The polite smiles vanished, replaced by open expressions of shock and disapproval.

A tall woman in a sequined top, one of Sandra’s bridge club friends, stepped forward. Her mouth was a tight line.

“Sandra,” she said, her voice dripping with cold disdain. “Fifteen thousand dollars? Forged signatures?”

Sandra shrank back, her eyes darting frantically. “It’s a misunderstanding, Carol! Brenda’s always been a little… eccentric.”

Carol shook her head, her gaze shifting to me. “Ms. Dempsey,” she said, her tone softening considerably. “I am so terribly sorry. Sandra told us… well, she painted a very different picture. Said you were just being difficult.”

Another guest, an older gentleman, chimed in. “Yes, she said you were upset about Tyler’s promotion, being jealous. We should have known better.” He gave Sandra a sharp, condemning look.

One by one, guests began to approach the porch, offering their apologies to me. They muttered phrases like “unbelievable,” “how could she?” and “I never would have thought.”

A few of them even looked at Tyler, their expressions sympathetic, as if to say, *we’re sorry your mother is like this.*

Tyler, my beloved nephew, stood utterly still, his eyes fixed on his mother. His face was devoid of color, his jaw clenched. He said nothing, but the sheer weight of his disbelief was palpable.

Sandra, meanwhile, was falling apart. She made a pathetic attempt to rally, her voice shaky. “Don’t listen to them! Brenda is just trying to get attention!”

But her words held no power now. The physical evidence, read aloud by an impartial professional, had irrevocably shattered her carefully constructed narrative. Her public smear campaign, which had painted me as bitter and unhinged, crumbled into dust.

One of the younger guests, probably a colleague of Tyler’s, actually pulled out his phone and quietly deleted a group chat, his face red with embarrassment. I imagined Sandra’s vicious messages, now exposed as baseless lies.

The guests began to turn away, not in a noisy exodus, but in a quiet, somber dispersal. They exchanged hushed goodbyes, their party clothes suddenly seeming out of place, their earlier exuberance replaced by a heavy disappointment.

Cars started, their engines rumbling softly as they backed out of my driveway. The stream of twenty-two people, who had arrived with such expectation, dwindled rapidly.

Chef Rossi, after a final, regretful glance at Sandra, gave me a small nod and began making his way towards his own vehicle, likely to call his lawyers.

Soon, only Sandra, Tyler, and a handful of stragglers remained on the lawn.

“Tyler, tell them!” Sandra pleaded, grabbing her son’s arm. “Tell them your aunt is crazy! Tell them she’s always been jealous!”

Tyler finally moved. He pulled his arm away from his mother’s grasp, slowly. He looked at me, then back at her. His eyes were not angry, but filled with a deep, profound sadness.

“Mom,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “What did you do?”

Sandra looked at him, truly looked at him, and her shoulders sagged. The last vestiges of her defiance drained away, replaced by a desperate, trapped animal look.

The remaining guests quickly said their goodbyes and melted away, unwilling to witness the raw family drama.

The only sound left was the gentle lap of the distant waves and the hum of the departing cars. The front lawn was now empty, save for Sandra and Tyler, standing like statues in the fading light.

Tyler took a slow, deliberate step back from his mother. His gaze, still on her, was cold, analytical. The kind of look a lawyer might give a client caught in a lie.

Then, he turned and looked at me, still standing in the doorway. His expression was a complex mixture of hurt, anger, and betrayal. But it wasn’t directed solely at his mother. Some of it, I could see, was for me too. For exposing her. For causing this public humiliation.

He didn’t speak. He just shook his head, once, slowly, before turning his back on his mother completely. He then walked away, not towards a car, but just across the lawn, towards the street, disappearing into the twilight without another word.

Sandra watched him go, a guttural sob escaping her lips. She was alone, exposed, her lies laid bare. And now, something else was coming.
