Chapter 12: Epilogue on the Following Sunday

Chef Rossi stood for a moment, his professional composure struggling to reassert itself. He ran a hand over his smooth, shaven head, a gesture of deep discomfort.

“Ms. Dempsey,” he began, his voice low, “I understand your position. But this is a rather… public affair.”

“It’s a public fraud, Chef,” I corrected him gently. “And it’s about to become a public revelation.”

I gestured towards the front door. “They’re all out there, waiting for a party that was never paid for, under my name. I believe it’s only right that they understand why.”

He sighed, a long, weary sound. He picked up the binder, then his own clipboard. His eyes flickered to the egg salad sandwiches on my table, then back to the binder. The contrast was stark.

“Very well,” he said, his voice firming. “As a professional, my reputation is on the line. I cannot be complicit in fraud.”

He took a deep breath, squared his shoulders, and walked towards the front door. I followed, stopping just inside the threshold.

He unlatched the door and stepped out onto the porch, leaving it slightly ajar behind him.

Sandra stood rigid on the porch, her face a mask of furious indignation. Tyler stood beside her, his shoulders slumped. The guests were a restless sea of whispers and anxious glances.

“Chef Rossi!” Sandra exclaimed, forcing a bright, brittle smile. “Good, you’re back! Did Brenda finally come to her senses?”

Chef Rossi ignored her, his gaze sweeping across the assembled guests. He held up the binder in one hand and his clipboard in the other.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced, his voice carrying surprising authority. “My apologies for the delay. There appears to be a significant issue regarding tonight’s event.”

A hush fell over the crowd.

“My company, Chef Julian Rossi Catering, was contracted to provide a Grand Seafood Buffet for this evening,” he continued, his tone formal. “The agreement, on file, listed Ms. Brenda Dempsey as the authorizing party.”

He opened the binder. The pages rustled in the quiet evening air.

“However,” he said, his voice devoid of emotion, “upon inspection of the physical payment authorizations, it has become clear that the signatures for these substantial charges are not Ms. Dempsey’s.”

He paused, letting the words hang in the air. A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

“I have here,” he held up one of the credit slips, “a merchant authorization form for seven thousand, eight hundred and fifty dollars, for the catering services. The signature, claiming to be Ms. Brenda Dempsey, is a forgery.”

Sandra let out a strangled cry. “That’s a lie! He’s lying!”

Chef Rossi didn’t even glance at her. He flipped to the next page. “And here, a separate authorization for seven thousand, one hundred and fifty dollars, for event rentals and equipment. Again, a forged signature.”

He then held up his clipboard, scrolling through a screen. “Furthermore, my team receives all communication for event details. We have a string of text messages, allegedly from Ms. Brenda Dempsey’s number, confirming these extravagant arrangements, down to the artisanal ice sculpture.”

He looked directly at Sandra. “The phone number used for these communications, which purports to be Ms. Dempsey’s, is the one associated with Ms. Sandra Dempsey-Kearney.”

He read a specific text message aloud: ” ‘Please ensure the champagne is Dom Perignon, Tyler expects only the best. Charge to Brenda’s account, she won’t mind.’ ”

The silence that followed was deafening. The guests were no longer just confused; they were openly staring at Sandra. Some of them had their hands over their mouths.

Tyler’s face, once beaming, was now pale, his eyes wide with shock as he looked at his mother.

Sandra, her carefully constructed façade shattered, began to stammer. “No! No, this is all a mistake! Brenda’s… she’s unstable! She’s trying to ruin Tyler’s night!”

Chef Rossi closed the binder with a definitive snap. “My sincerest apologies, ladies and gentlemen. Due to this egregious act of fraud and forgery, I cannot in good conscience provide services for this event. My company will be pursuing all legal avenues to address this.”

He looked directly at Sandra. “Ms. Dempsey-Kearney, you have committed fraud. The total unauthorized charges for this event exceed fifteen thousand dollars.”

He then turned back to the guests, his voice softening slightly. “I understand this is not the celebration you anticipated. But I believe it’s important that the truth be known.”

He handed the binder back to me, his eyes conveying a silent respect. I took it, clutching it to my chest.

The air thrummed with the weight of exposed truth. Sandra’s face was a mask of utter devastation, all the anger replaced by a horrifying, naked shame. The party was over before it even began.
