The words felt like a physical blow, even as I stood there, refusing to kneel. Arthur Pendelton’s face, usually so composed, had gone slack with fury.

He pointed a finger at me, trembling. “You will regret this, Maya.”

The heavy double doors of the boardroom still stood open, a sliver of the catered holiday banquet visible behind the hushed executives. The scent of roasted prime rib and expensive wine, once festive, now felt like a taunt.

“Regret what, Arthur?” I asked, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. My tablet felt heavy, warm in my grip.

“That retreat,” he snarled, taking a step toward me. “That entire $100,000 reservation for my top team.”

I looked down at the tablet screen. The confirmation page for the luxury mountain resort gleamed, a bright, triumphant blue.

“Consider it revoked,” I said, my thumb pressing down.

A digital confirmation flashed: “Cancellation complete.”

I held the tablet up, turning the screen slightly so he could see. A collective gasp rippled through the assembled executives. Arthur froze, his mouth agape. His eyes, usually cold and calculating, were wide with disbelief.

“You can’t,” he whispered.

“I just did,” I replied. “The company credit card used for booking was linked to our studio’s corporate account, which I manage. And I just initiated the refund.”

A man in a sharp grey suit, who I recognized as Mr. Henderson from Pendelton’s finance department, cleared his throat.

“Arthur,” he said, his voice quiet but firm. “Is this true? A $100,000 cancellation?”

Arthur spun around, his face a mask of scarlet. “It’s a mistake! A child’s tantrum!”

Another executive, Ms. Davies, head of marketing, stepped forward. Her gaze swept over me, then landed on Arthur with a chilling intensity.

“Arthur, you publicly humiliated a sixteen-year-old girl in front of thirty of your most valued tenants over a supposed catering delay. Now she has canceled our corporate retreat. I need an explanation.”

Her words hung in the air, heavy and accusing. The other executives began to murmur, their faces no longer merely curious, but openly hostile.

Arthur stammered, his eyes darting between me and his board. “She’s… she’s unstable. Unprofessional.”

“Unprofessional?” Ms. Davies scoffed. “She’s been organizing this entire event flawlessly for weeks. The only unprofessional behavior I’ve witnessed tonight is yours.”

I watched Arthur’s carefully constructed image begin to crack. The public humiliation he had planned for me had boomeranged, catching him in its wake. He had demanded my deference, my fear. Instead, I had shown him his own vulnerability, his own financial leverage stripped away.

His jaw tightened. “Get out of my sight, Maya. You’ll be locked out by morning. Consider your lease terminated.”

“We’ll see about that, Arthur,” I said, a new resolve hardening my voice. I tucked the tablet under my arm, met his furious gaze, and walked out of the boardroom, leaving him to face the fallout. The cold satisfaction was a tiny ember against the dread of his threat.
