Chapter 17: A Quiet Departure

Arthur Pendelton, the hotel’s head clerk, didn’t hesitate. He seized my arm, his grip surprisingly firm, and steered me away from the hushed, staring faces in the Grand Danforth lobby.

“This way, Miss Danforth,” he murmured, his voice tight. “A private parlor. Away from the… officers.”

The ‘officers’ he meant were a small group of impeccably uniformed Army men, gathered near the reception desk. They had arrived for their convalescence, and the last thing they needed was a scene involving a disheveled, bloodied woman claiming to own the place.

My injured leg dragged, but I kept my weight off it, moving as quickly as I could. The polished marble felt cold through my thin, torn dress.

Julian followed, his face still a mask of disbelief and anger. He moved with a practiced, predatory stride.

We ducked into a small, ornate parlor, rich with the scent of aged leather and lavender polish. Julian burst in behind us, slamming the heavy oak door shut.

The sound echoed.

He pulled a folded document from the inner pocket of his finely tailored suit jacket. It was cream-colored, official-looking, with a heavy stamp in the corner.

“This,” Julian announced, his voice regaining its usual arrogant clip, “is proof of your delusion.”

He thrust it toward me, crinkling the paper. Arthur stepped between us, taking the document.

“A death certificate,” Arthur read aloud, his eyes scanning the page, his voice wavering. “For Eleanor Danforth. Declared deceased… four months ago.”

My blood ran cold. I watched his face.

“Signed and stamped by Silas Croft,” Julian added, a smug curl to his lips. “Local insurance adjuster. Official.”

He meant it to be a final, crushing blow. But it only clarified the rot beneath the surface.

“Croft?” I repeated, my voice hoarse. “Silas Croft signed my death certificate? He wasn’t even at the crash site.”

Julian simply shrugged, adjusting his cufflinks. “He processed the paperwork. Standard procedure when a body isn’t… fully intact.”

A knot tightened in my gut. My mother’s car. Highway 11. That sudden, impossible failure of the brakes.

“The brakes,” I pushed, my gaze locking onto his. “They failed, Julian. Completely. No warning. Mother always had the Packard serviced by Vance.”

He flinched, a subtle shift in his posture.

“Don’t speak ill of the dead, Nora,” Julian snapped. “Your mother was a meticulous driver. A terrible accident. A tragedy.”

His eyes darted to the ornate clock on the mantelpiece, then back to the door.

“You’re a trespasser, Nora,” he declared, his voice rising, shedding any pretense of familial concern. “A deluded woman, clearly suffering from shock. You will be removed.”

Before I could respond, the parlor door swung open. Magistrate Holbrook stood there, his square jaw set, his gaze immediately falling on me. He wore a crisp, dark suit, a man of local authority.

“Magistrate,” Julian greeted him, a hint of triumph in his voice. “This woman is causing a disturbance. She claims to be my deceased cousin. I need her removed. Immediately.”

Holbrook’s eyes, cold and calculating, swept over my tattered clothes and the dried blood on my arm. He didn’t even acknowledge Arthur.

“Removed?” Holbrook echoed, his hand resting on the holster at his hip. “Or arrested?”
