My fingers felt cold against the smooth glass of my phone. Arthur Finch’s face, etched with impatience, waited across the boardroom table. The board members shifted in their seats, their gazes a mix of judgment and morbid curiosity.
They expected me to crumble.
“Is there a problem, Elena?” Arthur’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and condescending. He gestured at the stack of documents before him. “Or perhaps you just need more time to process your… options?”
I met his gaze, my hand steady as I unlocked my banking application. The digital interface glowed, a stark blue against the muted corporate colors of the room.
A murmur began to ripple through the room.
