The boardroom was cast in a sickly yellow glow from the emergency lights. Rain still hammered against the windows, a relentless drumbeat against the sudden quiet of the power outage.

Arthur Finch stared at the open safe, his face a mask of utter horror. His lips moved, but no sound came out.

“Chairman?” Dr. Albright’s voice was low, laced with concern.

Arthur didn’t respond. His eyes were fixed on the dark maw of the safe, a gaping hole in his meticulously constructed facade.

The storm’s fury outside seemed to amplify the silence within. It was as if the universe itself was demanding truth.

I walked slowly towards the safe, my feet soft on the plush carpet. The metal smelled faintly of old iron and dust, a stark contrast to the sterile, modern office.

“What is in there, Arthur?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper, yet it cut through the room like a knife.

He flinched, finally tearing his gaze from the safe to look at me. His eyes were wide, panicked, like a cornered animal. He knew.

I reached out, my fingers brushing against the cold, thick metal of the safe door. The darkness within seemed to beckon.

My hand slipped inside, fumbling for a moment in the gloom. I felt several flat objects. My fingers closed around a thick, folded piece of paper. It felt old, but crisp.

I pulled it out.

It was an envelope, made from heavy cream-colored paper, sealed with a blob of dark red wax. My name was written on it in elegant script, followed by my full address from years ago.

Then, below that, a second address: Arthur’s private home.

And then, the signature. Leo’s familiar, looping handwriting. My late husband.

My fingers trembled as I turned the envelope over. It was addressed to his father, Arthur Finch.

“What is that?” Arthur finally managed, his voice hoarse, a desperate plea for me not to open it.

I ignored him. My eyes scanned Leo’s familiar script on the envelope. My heart ached, a sharp, physical pain. This was a message from beyond the grave.

I carefully broke the wax seal. The faint scent of Leo’s cologne seemed to rise from the paper, a phantom memory.

Inside, a single, folded letter. Written in Leo’s own hand. My vision blurred as I recognized the familiar strokes of his pen. It was dated a week before the accident.

A letter to his father.

I unfolded the letter, my eyes darting over the words. Leo foresaw Arthur’s mistrust, his need to control, his potential to hurt me. He begged his father to protect me, to see past his own ambition.

And then, a postscript. A small, almost illegible scribble near the bottom.

“She’s pregnant, Dad. Take care of my child.”

My breath caught in my throat. I looked up, tears stinging my eyes. The DNA report in my other hand, the letter from Leo, the open safe. It all clicked into place.

This wasn’t just a letter. It was Leo’s final will, his dying wish, revealed by a twist of fate.
