The air in the boardroom grew heavy, charged with the double shock of my massive personal wealth and the revelation of Leo’s unborn child. Arthur Finch sat frozen, a statue of disbelief.

Then, the first rumble came. A low, distant growl that vibrated through the high-rise glass.

Outside the panoramic windows, the clear blue sky had vanished, replaced by an ominous, bruised purple. Dark clouds swirled, coiling around the gleaming tower like an angry serpent.

“What was that?” a board member whispered, nervously glancing at the darkening sky.

“It’s just a summer storm,” Arthur managed, his voice strained, clearly trying to regain control. But the tremor in his hands betrayed him.

Another, louder peal of thunder rattled the windows. Rain began to lash against the glass, not a gentle shower, but a violent, whipping torrent. The wind howled, a desperate moan around the building’s sharp edges.

I clutched the DNA report, its contents a fragile, precious secret. This wasn’t just any storm. It felt primal, furious, reflecting the chaos that had erupted in this room.

The lights in the boardroom flickered, then dimmed momentarily before snapping back to full power. An uneasy tension gripped everyone.

“This is unprecedented,” Dr. Albright murmured, looking out at the tempest. “An unseasonal atmospheric event of this magnitude.”

Suddenly, a blinding flash engulfed the room. A searing, brilliant white light exploded directly outside the window, followed by an instantaneous, deafening CRACK that reverberated through my bones.

The entire skyscraper seemed to shudder. A loud, metallic *CLANG* echoed from somewhere behind the main wall paneling, a sound completely out of place amidst the thunder.

Then, total darkness.

The emergency lights flickered on, casting long, eerie shadows across the stunned faces of the board. A low hum filled the void where the AC and computers had been.

Panic began to rise. A few people gasped.

From the wall behind Arthur’s desk, where an ornate, old-fashioned painting usually hung, there was another, distinct sound: a soft, mechanical *THUD*.

The painting had swung inward. Behind it, built into the solid wall, a heavy, almost antique-looking safe was revealed. Its thick, circular door, usually secured with a complex dial and bolts, now stood ajar.

A direct lightning strike. It had hit the tower, blacking out the main power grid. And, in doing so, it had somehow tripped the electromagnetic release of Arthur’s highly confidential, legacy mechanical safe.

The very safe Arthur used for his most closely guarded secrets, secrets that predated digital encryption.

My heart pounded. This wasn’t coincidence. This was fate, slamming the door open on everything Arthur had tried to hide.
