The heavy brass door to my study felt cold under my hand. Julian’s smug smile had frozen, replaced by a flicker of irritation when I didn’t reach for the pen.

He had expected me to crumble. He had expected me to sign.

“Eleanor,” Julian said, his voice dropping, “you’re being irrational.”

I looked at the ten-million-view video of my dance still playing on the tablet he held. The comments were a blur of pity and derision.

“Irrationality is a luxury, Julian,” I replied, my voice steady. “One I can’t afford.”

He took a step closer, the tablet still extended. “You don’t understand the scale of this. The foundation’s reputation, my entire campaign… it’s all tied to this perception.”

I didn’t react. I simply turned away from the tablet and walked to the antique mahogany desk. My fingers found the hidden release for the small wall safe behind the framed daguerreotype of my mother.

A quiet click echoed in the suddenly silent room.

Julian watched, his brow furrowed. He hadn’t expected this.

I retrieved a slim, leather-bound folder. Inside were the original Apex Media Group incorporation documents and my personal trust deeds.

“These are not up for negotiation,” I said, placing them back inside and closing the safe. The mechanism whirred, sealing it.

My attention then shifted to the small, secure laptop on my desk. I opened it and began typing, my fingers surprisingly nimble for eighty years. An encrypted message, a single attachment.

Julian cleared his throat. “What are you doing?”

I didn’t answer immediately. The email client whirred.

“I’m sending a copy of your proposal, along with some pertinent legal information, to my son, Marcus Kingsley,” I explained, finally looking up. “He’s Senior Assistant State Attorney General.”

Julian’s face went white. The color drained from his cheeks as if someone had pulled a plug.

“Marcus?” he choked out. “You haven’t spoken to him in years.”

“Family matters are complex, Julian,” I said, hitting ‘send’. “But loyalty is clear.”

The email went through. A small green confirmation appeared on the screen.

Julian stared at the laptop, then at me. His political strategizing mind was visibly racing, recalibrating. The immediate threat of my public commitment to a psychiatric facility, his primary leverage, had just evaporated.

He pocketed the tablet, his posture stiffening. “This changes nothing, Eleanor. Your son won’t know where to begin.”

“He’s a very thorough lawyer,” I reminded him gently. “And very protective.”

Julian backed away from the desk, his earlier confidence utterly shattered. He knew the weight of Marcus’s name in legal circles.

He stalked towards the door, his eyes darting around the study as if looking for another angle. He found none.

“Fine,” he bit out, his voice sharp with frustration. “You want to fight? We’ll fight.”

He pulled out his phone as he walked. I heard him speaking in hushed, urgent tones as he left the study, the heavy door thudding shut behind him.

He was already moving on to his next gambit, his next target. I knew the type.

He would deploy a new attack, and quickly. I just didn’t know yet it would involve a young, eager junior staffer named Chloe Bennett, someone completely unaware of the viper’s nest she was about to step into.
