The giant black bear stood at the river’s edge, water dripping from his shaggy fur. Maku’s breath clouded the cold air, a low growl rumbling in his chest. Tyler Lawson and his two crewmen stood frozen, their faces pale under the work lights from the truck, hands still reaching for the tools they’d dropped. The sudden silence, broken only by the rushing river, was heavier than any shout.

I pushed myself up from the rocks, my wet clothes clinging to me, the knots on my wrists still burning from where Tyler had tied them. My heart hammered, a drum against my ribs.

“Maku,” I whispered, my voice rough.

The bear shifted his weight, his eyes locked on Tyler. His immense head turned slightly, a question in his gaze.

“Enough,” I said, a little louder this time. “Stand down.”

Maku let out a soft huff, a puff of steam, but he did not move his eyes from Tyler. Tyler, for his part, slowly backed away from the river, his mouth a thin line. One of his crewmen stumbled, nearly tripping over a rock.

“You… you sick bitch,” Tyler finally managed, his voice cracking. “You keep a wild animal?”

I ignored him. My focus was on Maku, on the delicate balance of command and trust.

“Come, boy,” I coaxed, backing slowly into the shadows of the old-growth pines that bordered the gorge. “Let’s go home.”

Maku took one last, lingering look at the men, then turned, his massive body moving with surprising grace. He padded after me, his presence a living wall between me and the terrified men. The forest swallowed us whole, the dense canopy offering immediate concealment. I didn’t look back. I just kept moving, deeper into the familiar sanctuary of the trees, the image of Tyler’s white face burned into my memory.

I would not give him the satisfaction of violence. Not now. I had something far more powerful than teeth and claws. I had the truth.
