The cabin door creaked open, exhaling a plume of steam into the cold air. Sarah pulled me inside, her face tight with worry.

“Elena, what happened? The news is everywhere. They’re saying…” Her voice trailed off.

I set Maya down on the worn rug, her small hand still clutching my finger. “They slapped her, Sarah. Eleanor slapped Maya. Mark just watched.”

Before I could say more, headlights cut through the falling snow outside. A cruiser.

“Already?” Sarah whispered, her eyes wide.

Deputy Brandt stood on the porch, his face grim. He held a folded document.

“Elena Garza?” His voice was flat. “I have an emergency temporary custody warrant for Maya Redfield.”

My stomach dropped. How could they have gotten one so fast?

He handed me the paper. The blue ink of the magistrate’s signature seemed to mock me. It was dated January 12th. Today was February 2nd.

Twenty-one days.

My breath hitched. They had this warrant signed *before* Maya’s birthday party. This wasn’t a reaction to what happened; it was a trap. A deliberate, carefully planned ambush.

“Wait, Deputy,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “This is dated almost a month ago.”

He squinted, looking at the document, then back at me. “That’s the date on file, ma’am. I’m just here to execute the order.”

Sarah stepped forward, her voice rising. “This is a setup! My sister would never—”

“I understand your concerns, ma’am,” Deputy Brandt interrupted, his gaze fixed on me. “But I have my orders. Maya Redfield needs to be placed into protective custody.”

He took a step inside, his hand resting on the holster at his hip. A gust of icy wind followed him in.

I scooped Maya into my arms. Her little head burrowed into my shoulder, oblivious to the storm brewing around us.

“Protective custody?” I heard myself say. “From me? Look at this warrant, Deputy. It’s fraudulent.”

He ignored me, his eyes scanning the small living room. “Where are the child’s belongings?”

There was no time. The deputy was focused on the front of the cabin, the snow swirling in behind him.

I looked at Sarah, who met my eyes with a fierce nod. We both knew the layout of this place.

“Sarah,” I mouthed, pointing subtly to the back window.

She moved silently towards it, pulling back the heavy curtain that covered the small, frosted pane.

I clutched Maya tighter, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

“Ma’am, I need you to cooperate,” Deputy Brandt said, taking another step.

I turned and bolted for the back window Sarah had just revealed. With one hand, I pushed it open. The cold air rushed in, smelling of pine and damp earth.

I didn’t look back. I just slipped out into the deepening snow, Maya a warm weight in my arms, and plunged into the quiet, dark woods.
